But don't know enough to precisely say it is "giving out DHCP responses with an invalid Gateway IP".
I've just had 40 minutes on the phone with VM and was transferred to five times back and forward between the wrong teams. In the end the technical team raised a ticket, said they would update the hub 5 remotely and asked me to reboot it in 24 hours. If the problem persists they asked me to phone them back quoting the ticket number.

As expected, the remote VM Hub 5 update overnight made no difference whatsoever. Phoned VM back, battled the telephone tree and quoted the ticket number. The operator said I need a technician to visit and fix it. Clearly their database doesn't address this known fault of Hub 5 DHCP not working with a switch that has numerous ethernet connections.
My third party tp-link AX5400 router arrived today, so thanks community.virginmedia.com for sharing your knowledge, I'll sort this out myself.
