New connection, can I use my router?

Hi all,

My Virgin broadband was installed 2 days ago and I was given a Media Hub 5x. The installing engineer told me I could connect my existing Asus RT-AX86U router into the hub 5x.

So 1st thing I did was scan the web for info about setting up the Hub 5x as modem so I can connect my router  to it. I found some old info from last year saying the hub 5x can't  be converted to a modem only.

Is this still the case? which will make virgin a bad choice for me.

I run a vpn server off  Asus which allows me access to my NAS and multiple virtual machines while away from home

if hub 5x is a deal breaker, will virgin media swap it out to another hub that will work for me. if the answer is no then I might have to cancel contract within cooling period.

Thanks

buck nicely passed - is that because you dont know or dont want to say - afaik the 5x does not have modem mode so thats going to give you problems - theres talk of double nat being an option but thats for you to think about - other than that your router as an access point which will not do what you want

as to the dedicated line the number given is the general VM number and if all the experience here is anything to go by the advice you get will be meaningless as they wont have a clue

The 5x does not have modem mode, previous posts have suggested it as being available late last year, very early this year, spring this year, first half of this year.....

It may appear tomorrow as an update, or possibly it never will.

Strictly speaking the install tech wasn’t lying, you can connect your own router and use that, but there will be a double-NAT issue. This may or may not be a problem for you, are you running some kind of ‘server’ which you need to access from the outside? If yes, then, maybe a problem, not insurmountable, but still.

Both!

Use the Asus router in AP mode to avoid double NAT until modem mode is available.

One might reasonably suppose that if VM were ever intending to enable a facility that is already built into the Hub 5x, they would have done so long ago.

My name is NOT Alessandro. That's just a tag Virginmedia sticks on some contributors. Please ignore it.
