Forum Discussion
Hey gforgabagool, thanks for reaching out to us and a warm welcome to the Virgin Media forums.
I'm sorry to hear you're struggling to disable the broadcasting SSID on the Virgin Media Hub 3.
I have attached a video here which shows how to alter, change, split and disable the SSID.
Let us know how it goes and if you still need assistance.
Kind regards.

Didn't work. You've only sent me to a video that shows me how to do something that other people have described previously. And I'd already tried it myself before I originally posted here.
When I go to Advanced Settings -> Wireless Settings the option for WiFi Network Name (SSID) broadcast is disabled, as per the image I showed in a previous post.

I am having the same issue after receiving a replacement hub. I've done everything suggested on this post and still can't change the settings for broadcasting

Hello JCXP,
Sorry to hear you are having the same issue as others with the SSID.
I can look into this for you.
If you don't mind, I will need to send you a private message to pass security.
If you can check the purple envelope top right of your screen that would be great.
Regards

Hi JCXP,
I Hope you have better look than I have. I've had 2 members of the Forum Team try, and neither has succeeded.

Thanks as well for the account details.

Hey Alan_H, thanks for the posts and relpies.
Sorry to see we've tried to resolve your issue with SSID broadcasting but had no success yet, could you tell us how you get on since you last posted here on Monday?
Do you still need assistance with this issue?
Let us know where we are with this, happy to help further. - gforgabagool3 years agoTuning in
The checkboxes to set said broadcasting are still disabled for me, I don't want someone at virgin doing it for me - I should have control of these settings myself. Can you explain why they're disabled in the first place?

I agree with gforgabagool. Can somone explain how to un grey the SSID setting. The 5GHz one can be changed if I change the name and change it back again but the 2.4GHz one remains disabled and grayed out. I have wifi pods on the way and would like to set up a single SSID but can't because of this. Also why does the 5GHz channel keep reverting to 42 when I set it to above 56 even though everything smart and auto is set to off?

Hi guys,
I have this setup on mine no problem.
Can you try maybe renaming your WiFi network and chaging the default password?
- Go to 192.168.0.1
- Login
- Go to Advanced settings, Wireless, Security.
- It should look like this:
- Change the network name for both 2Ghz and 5Ghz (I normally choose a name then just add 2G & 5G at the end of it).
- Save and restart the hub. Login again following the above steps and see if it is no longer greyed out.

Appreciate you trying to help but I've already tried the steps you've described before coming to the forum, the checkboxes for ssid broadcasting on the 2.4GHz band remain disabled regardless

Hi, I am also having the same issue. The WiFi Network Name (SSID) broadcast is greyd out. New install Hub3
Standard specification compliant : DOCSIS 3.0 Hardware version : 11 Software version : 9.1.2109.200
- Alan_H3 years agoOn our wavelengthApologies for not responding earlier, but I've been in hospital for 2 weeks.
I've tried all the suggestions made to me and to others with the same problem, and nothing has fixed the problem. - Natalie_L3 years agoForum Team (Retired)

Hello Slam-dunk.
Thanks for your patience.
We have had an update.
It has been confirmed this is a known issue which will be resolved in the next release Firmware update 5.6.2.
The date of this has yet to be announced sorry.

Just to share info provided by VM team:
"It has been confirmed this is a known issue which will be resolved in the next release Firmware update 5.6.2. The date of this has yet to be announced " - W43 years agoTuning in
For me, the option to broadcast the 2.4 GHz SSID broadcast is stuck on No and option to change this is greyed out.
If I set different SSID on 5 GHz then I can make the change to enable SSID for the 5 GHz signal to be broadcast, but the 2.4 GHz SSID boardcast option remains greyedout and set to No/
Reading through comments this seems to be a firmware issue rather than something that I can fix at my end (Hub 3.0 device / Hardware version : 10 / Software version : 9.1.2109.200)
Yesterday I received the email below from virginmedia, so maybe there is a software upgrade / fix coming through on 7th November?
Your gadgets connect to your home WiFi using two networks, and will select which one depending on how far away you are from a Hub or Booster. One of your networks (2.4GHz or 5GHz) in your home WiFi seems to have been disabled which negatively impacts your WiFi experience.
Get more from your home WiFi
To stop your home WiFi being held back, we’d like to enable both of the networks. This’ll allow our latest Intelligent WiFi technology to switch your devices between the two WiFi networks while you move around the house – so you can enjoy better WiFi signal.
Intelligent Wi-Fi also spots when your devices are running into a traffic jam and automatically switches them to a better network.
Don't worry - if any of your devices only support the 2.4GHz network (perhaps because they're older), Intelligent WiFi will pick that up and stop the device from switching between the two networks, helping it to perform at its best.
Giving you an even better connection, when you need it
The 2.4GHz network typically has the longest range. Like a marathon runner, it covers longer distances, slower. The 5GHz network covers short distances, faster - like a sprinter. This makes it base for gadgets nearer your Hub or Booster. Our Intelligent WiFi helps to make sure your gadgets connect to the best network.
To update your settings, there's nothing you need to do - we'll do this for you on the 7th of November.
Don't want to have your networks managed into one Intelligent WiFi network? Just let us know here if you want to opt out by 11:59pm on the 3rd of November.
Take care,

Send a vote to VM by using modem mode VM at some point will remove being able to disable WiFi!
- martymart3 years agoDialled in
I had that e-mail too. Even though the 2.4 is on. I would like to be able to stop the SSID though.
If it ia a firmware update they should say so but all it says is
"To stop your home WiFi being held back, we’d like to enable both of the networks. This’ll allow our latest Intelligent WiFi technology to switch your devices between the two WiFi networks while you move around the house – so you can enjoy better WiFi signal. "
All on already. Oh well!

It does look like VirginMedia team have fixed one problem and created another.
Although I can now enable and use 2.4 I am no longer able to hide the SSIDs
Before the update I had the SSIDs hidden, now this is stuck on and there doesn't seem to be a way that I can fix this
