Gig1 Fibre broadband package and keeping my Hub5.

SNK

Hi all, I’m thinking about taking the Gig1 Fibre Broadband package. I’m on the M250 package at the moment but at times when I’m downloading my son complains that his games can slow down or become unplayable.

The question I’m asking is would I be able to keep my Hub5 as I don’t want the newer Hub5 due to the problems I’ve read on here about it not being able to be put into modem mode as I like to use my own router and don’t want to be downgrade to the Hub4.

Any replies would be gratefully received and considered along with any input from the support team on here.

If you have a Hub 5 now then it is not likely to be changed.
Hub 5 (DOCSIS) and the newer Hub 5x (XGS-PON) are not interchangeable.

Are you really downloading constantly at a speeds that saturates the M250 service ?
M250 can deliver more that 1.5GB per minute, so we are not talking about Pod casts and Kindle books.
if you are, throttle the download to ease the bandwidth hit.

Gamesters are always demanding more speed ( bandwidth ), but seldom want to hear that latency and jitter are the real killers of their online experience and home Wi-Fi is the biggest source of this issues.

Hi @SNK,

Thank you for your post and welcome back to our community forums. We're here to help.

I'm very sorry to hear that you're experiencing some issues with your connection. However, if you're already on a Hub 5 then we wouldn't upgrade your router at this time. Your model of router will already be able to provide the services and speeds that you'll be subscribed to.

Do you have any other issues with the connection and speeds on any other devices, or is it only when you're downloading that your son notices it on his games console?

Thanks,

Even the latest games can be played on 80/20 FTTP.  Upgrading to 1Gb will make no difference to slow or laggy gaming. Don’t fall for the marketing ….

Hi Zach,

It's not really a problem that I cannot work around by downloading at different times. Just wondering if more bandwidth would help out. It sometimes happens when either of use are downloading, both using PC's seems to be mainly with Steam.

Hi @SNK

How are the devices connected, wired/wireless?

Hi,

All the PC's are wired via cat6e cable.

Knows their stuff

Faster tiers can help with quicker downloads of content and updates.

For gaming itself, little difference as latency on DocSIS network (HFC) is not great for gaming and some other stuff. Full fibre FTTP is usually far better and where you'd notice quite an improvement.

Hi Unisoft,

We have CityFibre around us but the only pit fall with them is the only two ISP's at the moment are TalkTalk and Gigabit Networks which is run by Home Telecom so I'll have to wait to see if any more/better ISP's join CityFibre.
