Converting 5 GwH to 2.4 Gwh on Virgin Media router

castwar1930
On our wavelength

I spoke to a technical man at Virgin Media.  Because I need to use my home security camera when visiting another country. And 2.4 has a longer range than 5. And because my security camera simply says it doesn't work off 5 GhZ.   He advised that I convert my 5 GhZ router to 2.4 this way.

Is this correct?

a) press the Reset button on the bottom of my 5 GhZ router

b) after a short wait, it asks for my Password

c) then it asks if I want 2.4 Ghz or 5 GhZ.  I press the 2.4 Ghz option

He says that I go to Settings then to Network and Internet. On my Browser. I "imagine" this is where I am asked whether I want 2.4 or 5. Where a message comes up to that effect.

Is this accurate?

It's not a CCTV one.  Just a small one costing £40.  The most basic plug-in-and-play device.  It's only plugged into a normal socket.  Just like the router is plugged in.  This shows you the level we're talking about, and mine is this make.  https://www.ezviz.com/uk/product/c2c+1080p/913

We have yet to read how you are trying to connect the camera to the VM Hub 5,
or what happens when you follow that process i.e. a screen shot or photo of the errors etc...

If it doesn't work. Then I reset it.  As I've done a few more times before when this happened.  First off, it says it doesn't connect to the WiFi. Then i try again.  Using the reset button again.  This time the message is explicit.  A tick comes up next to 2.4 GhZ and a cross comes up for 5 Ghz.  It couldn't be clearer.  This never occurred before (the tick and the cross).

I glanced at a few other posts.  My level of technical knowledge is zero aside from knowing how to navigate the internet.

What I wondered  Is whether Virgin Media could return my old (2.4) router (or any other 2.4 router) to exchange it for this 5 GwH router they supplied.  At my cost, if that's the rule.  Where do I find out about this?.

In the last 10 years Virgin Media have never supplied a single band 2.4 GHz only router.

Remember I'm flying blind here, I don't know if you are looking at an app on a phone or reading the instruction !

A tick next to 2.4GHz sounds promising, can you select that as the option and proceed
to selecting or entering the SSID / Password for the new VM Hub ?

You can't get a 2.4Ghz only Router from VM.  If you think this is the solution, you will need to buy a simple N300 (2.4Ghz) access point and connect to it.  Something like this Buy TP-LINK TL-WA801N WiFi Access Point - N300, Single Band | Currys

Hi Adduxi.  Thank you.  I'm not a technical person, so I'm nervous of going inside the router.  But I may try.

Easier for me.  Is to exchange the 5 GhZ router for a 2.4 GhZ router from Virgin Media.

a) Is this allowed?

b) where do I talk to them about this?

Before I came on here, I tried to find out where I go to do this.  But got nowhere.  I ended up chatting to the bloke who gave me the information that I came here originally to discuss.  On the Virgin Media website, I couldn't find swapping routers listed as an option. The same problem when I go on the phone to discuss this.

With the best will in the world, we are going round in circles.  VM do not have a 2.4Ghz only Hub.  They all transmit both 2.4 and 5Ghz.  You can switch off the 5Ghz entirely, but the Hub or the VM Connect app may switch it back on.

@castwar1930,

Consider posting a screenshot of your Hub's Advanced settings > Wireless Signal page, an example is shown below with active Wi-Fi signal bands highlighted:
