Cannot play BBC iPlayer at all on my laptop.

When I tried to play anything from BBC iPlayer on my laptop, it says 'BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it’s due to rights issues.BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it’s due to rights issues.'

I am in UK and, according to 'What is my IP address' search, my IP location is London, even though I am based in West Yorkshire, and my ISP is AVAST Software s.r.o.

The question is how I can leave AVAST as I have no connection with them, and get to the point where I can watch anything from BBC iPlayer.  I have no problem watching the content on my phone as the IP is Virgin Media Limited with the correct location.

Recall your tracert from earlier in this thread, an Avast host is shown at hop two.

I ask again: Does the Hub's Public IP match or differ from what websites see as your Public IP ?
If it differs a VPN or Proxy are present.

What can you tell us about the private address 100.126.0.1?  Are you in modem mode with your own router? It looks like a gateway address.

There definitely is, as the tracert shows your traffic being routed through Avast servers. This would only happen if it had been installed was overriding the default network settings. Your other devices are working as expected as they don't have Avast. 

It's possible Avast was installed in the past, then removed, but the networking settings haven't been erased.

It may be worth trying a full reset of your network settings,you will need your WiFi password again as the laptop will forget the existing connection:

It's even possible that Avast has been lurking on that laptop since new. Many makers bundle similar utilities in with PCs.

Have you actually checked the list of installed programs for anything with a similar name?

From the ipconfig/all in Start Menu, the IPv4 address starts with 100. but the IPv4 address by WhatIsMyIP starts with 77.

Hi @paulphonak 

It's possible that you have an avast  VPN browser extension installed.

ipconfig /all only lists the local ip address (your computers ip address)

type or copy paste the following which shows your public ip address into the command prompt 

nslookup myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com

The result will look similar to the one below (where Address: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX will be your public (external) ip address and should match that shown on /whatismyipaddress.com  )

Server: dns.sse.cisco.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: myip.opendns.com
Address: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Also you can type 192.168.0.1  into a browser window and sign into your VM hub.

Then in the left hand column click on Admin and then on Info . 

Then you can see your public (external)  ipv4 address which i have indicated by a row of X's in the screenshot below.  Again should be the same as that shown on  /whatismyipaddress.com

Following your instruction for my VM hub, the IPv4 address at my hub is very different from the one from WhatIsMyIPAddress.

What should I do next?

If you are using a VPN or a proxy, the IP address returned by whatismyipaddress.com will be the IP address of the VPN or proxy server, which will differ from the WAN IP reported by the VM hub. Some additional thoughts for finding this Avast VPN are:

  • do a Windows search (Windows + S to open the search bar)
  • do a file explorer search in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86)
  • look in processes tab of task manager (do Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager)

because its meant to be viewed in an authorised location: UK. The fact your VPN gives access by pretending its in the UK, still means the content is being viewed in another country as well as IP packets being routed there.

Rights holders of content only license to the jurisdiction the broadcaster operates in. They have a duty to prevent where they can, content being accessed by a non-licensed location. UK broadcasters buy content in, and their UK content is often made by independent production companies.
