I'm going to be recycling an old TiVo box when it gets replaced with a TV360 one. Being of a somewhat neurotic disposition when it comes to binning any IT equipment, I can't help wondering whether TV boxes retain any sensitive account information that could be of use to the bad guys for the purposes of identity theft, phishing and the like.
Does anyone know whether this is the case, and if so how to reliably zap it before I hand it over to the tender mercies of my local council? Or do I just need to trust them to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands?

If you look through the user menu on the TV box, you should be able to find an option to delete all the settings.

Sorry David, no I don't have a receipt for this.

By the way, as should be apparent from the original post, I had no idea that there was a mechanism by which I could return stuff like this, without me having to take it to the Post Office and pay for postage and packaging myself. As well as the lack of any indication of this at the time of the issue, there have been 4 years in which Virgin could have asked for this router back, but no-one has done so (I only got rid of it a few months ago).

Hi @Henricus
Welcome back to our community forums and thank you for your post. We want to do our best to help from here. As mentioned by @jpeg1, via your TV box settings, you can remove any personal settings on the TV box. In regards to returning the TV box, as seen here, we no longer request that TiVo boxes be sent back. We generally advise for you to recycle and dispose of them as seen in the link sent prior. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further help.
Thanks,
