Port my BT phone number to Virgin

I would like to move my existing BT landline phone number to Virgin Media with whom I also have a phone line now

there seems to be no point in keeping BT as Virgin provides the same service... and probably better !

I have received the adapter from Virgin and have tested the line, it is working fine with my phone

I have tried and tried to get through by phone to the right person at Virgin customer services but without success and the last person I spoke to did not have a clue and told me to ring BT .

Can someone suggest how I can make this happen easily as all my "slightly older" friends have my landline number so I would like not to lose it, but would prefer to have all my services in one place ! BT of course would not be helpful in this matter

Yes I would like keep my bt number if that's possible,  have not cancelled my bt line yet

Well we thought it was all sorted and Michael had worked his magic but this morning I received a message from Virgin Media saying we are unable to port the BT number  as it is disconnected from your current provider, we can only port active numbers  ?  I;m confused as the BT line is working perfectly,  I have not notified them or cancelled them..  Any advice as to what we do next  thanks and best wishes   Alex
