Sign in to Outlook is not working

On our wavelength

Today at 11.00 am I got asked to sign into my email on the Outlook app on my phone. I tried the saved email app password and it didn't work. The email was working in the Outlook app on my computer, using the saved password. I need it on my phone so I went into my account to generate a new password. I got completely befuddled by a requirement to add another email account so that I could be verified (and which seems to have now become my user name on my Virgin Media) but eventually was allowed into my account where I generated a new password. That password does not work on my phone app, but it does work on my pc app. I just get a message Log-in erro Please check your email and password and try again

I've reset the account and I've rebooted the phone and I've tried the old password, the new password and  my My Virgin Media password.I've checked the setting and notes that the SMPT port was set to 25 rather than 465, but changing that didn't help either.

The only difference I can see is my phone is on POP3 and my pc is on IMAP.

Can anyone help?

Knows their stuff

Outlook will use TLS rather than the old, deprecated port 25 for SMTP.

I assume you are using Virgin Media Email service, so your port settings are correct as some other email providers use ports 587 for SMTP using StartTLS and port 995 for the POP3 server port. From previous posts, I believe after generating the email app password from 'My Virgin Media portal' online, you have to go through setup to re-add your email account for it to work again.

For reference, VM's help page is this for settings:

For other customers reading, providers like outlook.com or hotmail.com email addresses, POP3 access may not be available in legacy access mode as Microsoft have switched off basic authentication, see:
