Why do Virgin want us to get IMAP passwords fro email addresses?

I know that there have been discussions about Virgin requiring us to have IMAP passwords  for our ntlworld  email addresses. However I am still uncertain was to what will be the real effect of geting such a password as Virgin is demanding every few minutes on my iphone.

I have been a Virgin customer for a good number of years and all my email addresses are set up on the POP system. My concern is that if I go into the Virgin website as they demand and obtain an  IMAP password for each of my email addresses- that will have the effect of making these accounts into IMAP ones not POP ones. Indeed the request from Virgin in these demands  is for me to enter "The password for the IMAP account"- for the email address that one is using.

The POP and IMAP systems are different and I see no reason to change from POP to IMAP.Quite separately,as I have about 20+ years of emails in my systems transferring all of them to IMAP looks a huge amount of work carrying considerable  risk.

Are my concerns reasonable , and how do I stop Virgin persistently demanding these passwords on my iPhone.Indeed these demands on my iPhone are so regular about one of my addresses that the iPhone no longer receives or sends emails using that address. My laptop and PC have no difficulty in dealing with all my email addresses including that one,  and they never show this Virgin demand for an IMAP account password.

All help will be really appreciated.

Many thanks.

IMAP and POP are two different methods for accessing email. VM supports both.

Are you referring to an 'app' password, which is required when using an email client?

This is generated within 'My Virgin Media' for the mailbox in question. As per Graham_A, below

When you are setting up a mail client, you use your VM email address and the app password (and the settings you require from the list below if you are entering the settings manually)

POP has been considered by many to be dead/on the way out for years. Apple Mail has not been available with POP for ages.

Just to clarify, VM implemented what they refer to as a "Mail App" password rather than a  password specifically for IMAP accounts.

See the screenshot from my "My Virgin Media Account" below.

That works with POP3 and IMAP accounts.

You do not have to switch to your email apps and clients over from POP3 to IMAP but you do need a VM "Mail app" password for each  VM email account that you access via an email app or client.
