VM email not working with Gmail app

Hi I've merged my VM and 02 accounts as requested and was forced to also changed my password.

I'm able to log in to my emails via a web browser but the Gmail app that I've used to years no longer recognises my account details. I've even tried to remove the account and re-add it. The IMAP settings remain as they were, and published on the VM support pages.

Has anyone else experienced this, and can anyone shed any light into why this has happened or how to resolve it?

I've tried to reach out to support by phone and Web chat but receive no response!

Have you generated the four word password required for email clients, or apps as VM call it.?  Gmail will use your old NTL/VM/BY email address and a four word password.  The Webmail will use your new VMO2ID and it's associated password.  The two ways of getting emails are completely different.

Hi DL_VM thanks for posting although we're sorry to hear of your concerns raised.

Are you still having problems with the set up today or is it all resolved for you now?

        Many thanks

@jb3010 I generated the password, but it still doesn't recognise the sign in details. I hope you've received emails by now!

DL_VM Try generating a new email app password.

Sign into the My Virgin media account for the email concerned with your VMO2ID

    Select Account Settings

    Select Identity & Security Settings

    Select Manage your products

    Select Manage email app password

Click on the blue button 'Get New Password'

Make a note of the generated password. This is what you use in the mail apps along with the vm email address as the username.

Thanks for the fast responses, I'd been looking for where to generate the password but couldn't find it. So I've followed these steps and its let me set up he account, on Google with the new password (ie Username= my virginmedia.com email address, Password is the newly generated password), however its still saying:

      Problem with account setup
Your username or password is incorrect.

    A couple of things;

Have you removed the old Gmail client account and re-added as new?

Try leaving a hour or so between generating the new four word password and access the mailbox.  This is to allow the VM authentication servers to sync the new password between them.

@Adduxi yes I completely removed the old account and added as new. It let me add it, but then does not recognise the sign-in credentials

Virgin Media Account - is linked to the account holder - who has set up the account TLDR - Ofcom now involved....Watch this space

I did this Monday - Now I'm locked out of my webmail’s and can only access via my mobile.

I have tried all the ways virgin are pretending work..... they don't work.

    OK....

    1. Our Broadband account was setup in early 1990's possible 1994?
    2. Broadband set up in husband’s name
    3. My husband and I have a joint bank account
    4. We have had out same email accounts since broadband was set up
    5. I cannot change my password unless my husband tells virgin over the phone
    6. I cannot access the account unless I have his permission
    7. We had virgin mobile's also since 1990's - 1996 or 1997
    8. Our virgin Mobile's were forced into O2 a couple of years ago
    9. I have gmail accounts - Have had same gmail since 1998 or 1999
    10. Have had various arguments with Virgin Media they are treating me like a second class citizen, by forcing me to have my husband on hand when I need to change passwords - this has happened several times over the years
    11. On Monday Virgin Media requested 2PA - 2 Part Authentication - for my Virgin email
    12. Once then I have no access to my webmail - tried everything, rang them, the website is useless and nothing works
    13. Today I logged in to the Virgin account, while my husband was there, told to by Virgin media guy, went through the process only to fine they had not logged me into my emails but my husband email account - data breach
    14. Rang Ofcom - explained the situation that Virgin Media had destroyed my webmail access
    15. Ofcom contacted VM and a customer accounts person Lynnette, from Virgin Media just rang me - On my husband phone!!!!!
    16. I told her if she wants to speak with me she needs to call me on my phone
    17. Lynnette, from Virgin Media just rang me on my phone - some progress
    18. Have been informed my email address no longer appears on the account - Basically VM have deleted my email address but for the moment I have access on my phone

For anyone who is still having problems adding their VM accounts to Gmail here are the  server settings that work for me when accessing Virginmedia ,  Ntlworld or Blueyonder email accounts through Gmail.

They alll use the same VM server settings.(Gmail tends to default to using the Ntlworld and Blueyonder servers but it's better to use the Virginmedia servers).

These screen shots come from my browser version of Gmail but the settings themselves also apply to the Gmail app.

    Import - pop3 settings

    "Send as" SMTP settings:

Just for completeness the IMAP import settings are:

    In all cases:

    • the Password is the 4 word Mail app password not the password you use to sign into your VM account directly.
    • the Username is your VM email address in full.
    • you need to specify SSL connection enabled
