Unused Orphan Email Account Hacked

Hi

I had a virginmedia.com email address, that I stopped using many, months ago, all I ever received was spam but didnt know how to cancel it having previously being told it was an orphan account and it would automatically end after non use. It never did. In Feb this year I received an email saying my email/password has been compromised and stating my password. I went online to try to log in so as to change the password but I could not log in as they obviously changed the password. Can someone assist in how to cancel the account please?
