I have just gone through the painful process of generating an App Password, having to change sign-in emails to an alternative one. I wanted to set them back now to my @ntlworld email address as it is my primary email but I get a message saying that I can’t use @ntlworld addresses
Why can’t I use an email that was fine until I was forced to change it to generate the app password??
You can continue to use the ntlworld email address just as before except that you need to sign into the VM webmail page with the new third party username email and the normal account password. This will then take you to the ntlworld email account.
If using an email client such as Thunderbird or Outlook then the username continues to be the full ntlworld email address together with the generated app password.

Virgin Media claim that it is to improve security of the account by requiring a third part username for 2 factor authentication.
I agree that it seems a cumbersome way of implementing 2FA.
