I saw on another thread that a Virgin staff member has to intervene to reconnect the virgin.net email addresses.
I believe that was for “orphaned” mailboxes that existed. If the mailbox is deleted they can’t assist.

Sid_M "Test emails bounce back even though I am paying. "
Those bounce back messages will give the reason the email could not be delivered - so what do they say? That will be a big clue as to what's wrong.
If you look at a bounce back message, after a few lines of text there will be a line that says:
"The following addresses failed:" and then there will be some more text.
For example, it may well say:
"MXIN501 mailbox xxxxx@virgin.net unknown"
Does it say that your email address is unknown or something else?
If it says the mailbox is "unknown" it means that your virgin.net account no longer exists.
If it says something else then post here with what that line says but do no not post your virgin.net email address.

550 5.1.1 MXIN501 mailbox [.....virgin.net] unknown
Even saying what you did you have been 1000% more informative than the helplines..
Same experience as MDM2. Interesting the email suffixes are the same.
Personally I think the email accounts do exist somewhere but Virgin need to switch on a server for virgin.net

Sadly I don't think it's as simple as that.
MDM2 has given an update here Virgin.net no email access | Virgin Media Community - 5655845
It does not sound as if they have regained access to the virgin.net account but perhaps he / she could clarify that?

This is what my error message says when I try to send a test email and it 'bounces back'. Going by what you have said, this does not fill me with hope...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but at least you can now be a bit more specific talking to VM
That error certainly explains why your having no joy accessing your account

See attached capture.. It keeps saying "Please try again later", but later never ever happens - it never fixes.. All test emails bounce. Is the server down ??

The Bing addon in Firefox did nothing. I have a Virgin account which I can log into but the email part of it is dead. Why is this ? I saw on another thread that a Virgin staff member has to intervene to reconnect the virgin.net email addresses. Can you please now intervene to do this..

I'm exactly the same, apparently email is a complimentary service! I have zero confidence in them resolving this. Has taken up hours of my time, some people seem to have been able to login but it is pretty widespread for sure.
