secondary email -how to login?

My primary email account is a blueyonder ("robert" ) and my wifes is a secondary off that ("jane"). We have used those for years without many problems. When the virginO2 changes occurred I successfully set up a new login with a new password and I can now login to MyVirginmedia using my "robert" email plus the new password.

Our problem is my wifes email account. It still works ok on her phone. BUT......she has a windows laptop running Outlook and now cannot login to see emails on there. We have tried to log in using the old password as well as the new O2 password....but neither works. WE then tried to setup (like I did) a new O2 login on her "jane" blueyonder email.....but that fails ( using either of the passwords we have?)

Incidently when setting up the new O2 password on my primary "robert" account I had to input a third email we sometimes use (gmail) - which then came back with a verify button to press. Is this relevant to the issue  with my wifes secondary email access?

Would appreciate some simply help / steps with this please? We have tried to follow some of the many postings in this forum for the last few weeks but still no joy. It seems a shame that what had worked well for many years seems to be causing issues for many people.

Thank you

Well - thats about 5 or 6 hours of my life I'm not getting back!!  I think I may have got everything working now. But I would struggle to explain all the hoops and cul-de-sacs I've just jumped through and visited.

The key thing ( huge thanks to Graham on this thread) was to login to My Virginmedia on my phone and eventually managing to navigate to that "generate a new password for mail app" button.  Slightly boggling was to see a string of 4 random words separated by small dashes. It was that which I used to then login to my wifes blueyonder email on her windows laptop running Outlook. ( Do you type in the 4 words all together?  Or include the dashes?  Seemed to be the latter!! But of course no-one explains these little things!)

We got slightly sidetracked resettingup my blueyonder email on my android Pixel phone. Right down to ports/ssls and eventually realising that server settings meant the same as "host" and that the IMAP incoming/outgoing names had to be virginmedia not blueyonder as came up by default.

Ho hum. I personally am reasonably au-fait with this kind of stuff.  I honestly feel for those/ the majority who just want a simple step by step guide to getting their email working. Thanks again to Graham above for responding and pointing me in the right direction. Good luck to others still suffering!!!

Can you expand on how the VMO2ID for the 'jane' account failed?  The first time you try and log into the secondary account after the July 14th changes you should enter the secondary email address (or third party email username if it already had one).  Use the existing secondary account password.  You will be prompted to set a password for the VMO2ID account, it is ok to use the old password if you want to.  Follow the prompts to set a backup email address and other alternative security details.  This should then give you access to the secondary email account.

You can then generate an email app password as follows:

If you are using an email app or client to access your emails you are likely to need an app password, especially if you changed your password when signing into the VMO2 ID.

To create an email app password or update an existing one you need to follow these steps:

Sign into the My Virgin media account for the email concerned with your VMO2ID

    Select Account Settings

    Select Identity & Security Settings

    Select Manage your products

    Select Manage email app password

Click on the blue button 'Get New Password'

Make a note of the generated password. This is what you use in the mail apps along with the vm email address as the username.

  • Hi graham. Thanks for the prompt response.

On the page ..Sign in or register for VMO2...we type in the  Jane blueyonder email.  The page changes to ....enter my vm password. We put in the old original virgin password which we have used for both emails for years. Clicked submit and a red box at top of page says...your password wasn't verified. Please try again.

We are stuck at that point!!!

When you get to that point are there any options show to ' Verity another way' or similar?

  • No options. Just get the red box .  Across the top is the 4 steps....verify/signin/2factor/success.

Thanks for coming back to say you have managed to sort it out.

Just to confirm that you do need to include the dashes between the four words in the app password.
