Ntlworld email account - the runaround

I've spent most of today trying to solve a problem. No joy so far.

Here's how I explained it recently to the help messaging service:  I just had a messaging exchange with Har**bleep**ha. I told her my problem - that I can't get Outlook on my phone to accept my ntlworld password, even though my pc version of Outlook accepts it OK. Har**bleep**ha told me that Virginmedia no longer looks after ntlworld accounts and that they are managed by TalkTalk. After a lot more research I have found out that this is not true. Virginmedia manages ntlworld accounts. So far I have wasted six hours on this. I might as well give it a bit longer.

And here's their reply:  Hi, thank you for connecting with Virgin Media. I hope you are doing well today. I can see you have mentioned that,  you were speaking with Har**bleep**a regarding Nltword and she told you that Virgin Media no longer manage account of NTLworld. The information that is provided by Har**bleep**a is absolutely correct. I'm sorry you have got wrong information in your research.

And I said: So why do all the websites I consulted (and the AI research sources) say that Virginmedia can handle ntlworld accounts through its IMAP server, whereas TalkTalk (which Har**bleep**ha said was looking after ntlworld accounts now) say they don't? It is a fact that ntlworld were taken over by Virgin.  And I did change my password today via Virginmedia, and the password does actually work. It just doesn't work on my phone. That's the problem.

And they said: I really appreciate your efforts however all the information that is there online are may be false or not up to date,  however I'm providing you the genuine information that the Ntlwolrld I'd is not more handled by Virgin Media. Apart form this is there anything else that I can help you with?

And I said: Yes. You might tell Richard Branson that I'm paying him over £100 a month and I'm not very impressed.

PeterLews. When updating the password in the Outlook app on your phone you need to delete the Ntlworld account from the app and then add it back using the Ntlworld email address as the username together with the four word generated app password.

By the way your research is correct in that the Ntlworld domain is managed by VM,  however Richard Branson has nothing to do with Virgin Media these days. The company is owned by Liberty Global.

  • Thanks Graham. I tried that but it didn't work. I have the feeling that I need some IMAP & SMTP passwords as well, but obviously I've no idea what they're supposed to be.

Ah, problem solved. The trick is this. After you delete the account from Outlook and then try to add it again, Outlook will say 'account found' and offer to reinstall it. Don't do that. Untick the box. Then carry on as Graham suggests. It works. Thank you.
