ntlworld.com problems

Hi,

We are long term virginmedia subscribers (since ntlworld launched the cable modem service in the area) and have three @ntlworld.com email accounts associated with it.

Yesterday afternoon, one of the accounts stopped receiving email although the other two accounts are working fine. I've tested this by sending multiple emails to that account over the past day to test. Those sent to my account work fine, to the other do not. I can log in to the email account via IMAP without issue and access previous email there but new email is not being delivered to that account. Manually delivering an email via SMTP to the server in the MX records show the email being accepted but no message has been delivered to the mailbox.

Is this a known problem, or is there something wrong with the account?

Steve

  • This might actually be an identity theft attempt — what’s the best way to contact VM about this?

One of the Forum Team (VM  staff) will contact you via this thread in the next day or so. Or you can contact Virgin Media support by calling 0345 454 1111 or 150 from a VM phone.

However, before doing that it help if you could clarify whether you can access the affected Ntlworld account directly by signing into the VM webmail service.

You don't mention using VM webmail to check your email. So in case you are not aware, the best way to do that these days is to sign into the My Virgin Media account for that Ntlworld email account from here   https://www.virginmedia.com/myvmo2

Enter the VM02 ID for that Ntl email account. Depending on how you have set up the VM02ID for that email account, it could be either the Ntl email address or a third part email address. Then enter the password for that account.

Once signed it, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and you'll see the link to the webmail account:

If you can access the affected Ntl email account you need to check whether the missing emails are there. If they are not there you need to check whether an autoforward has been set up a hacker.

If you cannot access the account what error message do you get?

  • I don't believe a vmo2 account was ever set up for that address -- it's only ever been accessed via POP3 for the past 26 years…

When I tried to create one last night, I saw an unrecogised email address pop up as an alternative address…

Have you ever used that same email address and its accompanying password to access other sites and services elsewhere?

We see regular topics on here where a data breach can lead to VM email addresses being accessed where email/password combo's have been reused in different places.

I am not surprised to hear that.  The VM02 ID just becomes the username for the VM account, it's not a separate account.

However, last year VM made some major changes to the security of their email accounts so that will need to be done for all your Ntl email accounts. See here  https://www.virginmediao2.co.uk/help/identity  If you contact VM I would expect that would be one of the first things they ask you about.

Ok. You only need a VM02ID to access the VM account online on the VM website but the email settings in your POP3  or IMAP email client still need the actual VM / Ntl email address.  However, email apps account settings do need to use a separate VM Mail App password and to generate that you need to access to the My Virgin Media account for that email account. That's another change you may be unaware of.

You may also not be aware that VM stopped issuing new email accounts nearly 4 years ago and since then new VM customers have not had the option of getting VM email accounts. VM are also closing down VM email accounts that are not linked to a current VM broadband account.

VM do still support VM email accounts for current customers but the future of the VM email service is unclear.

@Coenoby, I've checked I can access the mailbox by IMAP and POP3 without issue (I teach Networking and Cybersecurity to Computer Science students -- this stuff is second nature), the problem is that emails are not being delivered to the mailbox even though they are accepted by VM's email server.

I've just looked in the main account activity log and there's an entry for Wednesday night that reads 'Sign in -- Action carried out by a Virgin Media O2 agent', which is not something we've done.
