ntlworld account full of spam

When Virgin media migrated email accounts a couple of years ago I no longer had access to out of office, blocking emails, filter rules, blocklist or forwarding address. My account became such a miasma of total rubbish I changed over to gmail. I cannot delete the ntlworld account even though my account primary email has been changed- it does not give me the option to delete it in my Virgin account settings. Help please

I don't think a VM mailbox can be deleted if it is part of the primary account.

  • Thanks for your post on our Community Forums ChrisEvie, and welcome back!

We would need to advise that we would not be able to delete primary E-Mail accounts on our services - only secondary or if you have since disconnected from Virgin Media's service.

Can you please confirm if you are indeed still an active user?

    Thanks

    David

I still have Virgin Media Broadband- I tried to switch to another provider but the copper phone lines to my block of flats no longer exist (replaced by Nynex/Cable and Wireless cables many years ago) There is no fibre in my area!!! I have no choice but to stay with Virgin and their continued inflationary prices. Looks like I'll have to drag along the ntlworld email account- I cannot even add a forwarding address. Thanks for update

I have the same issue with an old ntlworld.com email address that can not be removed, and switched to other providers for email.

It is correct that the primary email can not be removed.

I get spam email most days on the old ntlworld.com email, but have set the email filters in settings to manage them better.

I also set up filters for the genuine emails which then go to a specific folder.

Regular spam emails from the same sender or domain can also be filtered out (see email settings)  or sent to a spam or holding folder folder. The ones that keep changing the sender address still keep coming though, and VM sometimes tag as spam if the spam settings are to tag spam.

Beware of phishing emails and always check the sender address, and best to avoid clicking on links, images, downloads etc.

The dangers are if you  give out your data to a hacker on a fake website, or clicking on a link or attachment that will compromise your computer or device, so best to avoid spam emails, but be aware of such things as identity theft attempts or using your email to sign up for goods/services etc.

As VM are phasing out the VM email service, it would make sense to allow deletion/de-activation of an old primary email, but they insist you have to keep it even it is a problem email, or insecure due to being breached in the past and on the dark web hackers listings and this means monitoring the email for security issues regularly.

I have added an auto forward to my ntlworld.com email so I can monitor this old primary email addess activity on a Yahoo.com email address. The yahoo spam filters should pick up any spam.

So what ever happens in the future, I still have a record of the current and past emails, which may come in handy to check if the account is still active, but I still need to log in to the VM email account within a  90 day period to keep it active. This is advised by virign for example when you close the VM service for example, or for some other reason can not access the email.

I also use the  thunderbird email client which gives another way to log in using the app password, as an alternative to using webmail, or if the webmail goes down.
