Imap not working on W11 laptop

My Outlook stopped receiving & sending NTL emails on a W11 laptop, but works on my Android phone.

I only found out yesterday that I was meant to be using a app generated 4 word password which I started using. it took about 10 hours for Outlook to recognise the new password this was after clearing the cache & uninstalling & reinstalling Outlook. I changed the password on my phone & Outlook works perfectly.

I received 1 email on my laptop since I changed to the new type of password & now it has stopped working again, & sign-in constantly fail

You can't download the classic Outlook anymore even though MS have a page to download it. You get instead MS365+Office which needs to be paid for.

VM don't know how to fix the problem. Their extended tech dept which you have to pay for have no idea how to fix it. Their solution was just wait.

Can anybody help?

Glancing down the email forum there seem to be quite a few mentions of Outlook not working. But it's hard to tell if this is an Outlook problem or just a regular 'VM-email-is-always-broken' problem.

Have you tried using Thunderbird as an email client? I have just switched to it from Outlook 2016 and I have found it very impressive. And it's free.

The VM tech downloaded Thunderbird & it worked instantly.

  • I've been having the same problem for the last 2 days, wasted hours on it.

I tried downloading Thunderbird (Mozilla) desktop email client today ,added NTLworld IMAP email and it worked instantly , so am now thinking that the issue may be the Outlook app, apparently the IMAP side of it is still in development and we all know how Microsoft like breaking things!

(Thunderbird have a mobile app too if needed , think you have to tweak folder settings to get Sent folder to sync with Desktop)

If you set up Thunderbird (both desktop and mobile) as IMAP, then they should both synchronise the mailbox. This is subject to the limitations of whether VM email is actually working on any particular day, or not.

Unfortunately, the only way to permanently resolve VM email problems is to stop using VM email and move to a new email provider.

I have been really pleased an impressed with the Thunderbird program. I have come to the conclusion that MS products mostly now behave like malware, constantly changing and resetting things without me knowing about it. As a result, I am now switching to better alternatives.
