How To Recover Password?

Not as simple as the title suggests...

Under my Virgin Media account a total of 3 email addresses have been created/moved from NTL.

They are, let's say, ONEatNTLworld.com, TWOatNTL... and THREEatNTL...

ONE and TWO are showing in My Virgin Media. THREE is not.

THREE is my mother's email address, only ever added to an old version of Outlook on her laptop - not web-based or Office365 linked.

If I want to add THREE to My Virgin Media, I can't as she has forgotten her password. I also can't add it to another email client if something should go wrong with her laptop.

How do I recover/reset the password for that email account, either so she can create a new memorable password or recover her account if need be?

You will need to login to My VM with the 3 email address.  This should prompt you to create a 3rd party email address and reset the password.  You will also have to create a new four word password to use with Outlook or any other email client.   There are no longer any “secondary” email addresses and every mailbox now’s needs its own 3rd party email .

Sadly, when it comes to VM email nothing is ever simple -sorry about that. 😉

Just to clarify things a bit:

Actually you are raising two separate issues:

    1)      “I want to add THREE to My Virgin Media

    2)      “How do I recover/reset the password for that email account

    To deal with those issues:

    1)      Sorry, but you personally cannot link your mother’s email account to your My Virgin Media account, only VM can do that. However even if you could, VM removed the ability to reset the password for (let’s call them) secondary email accounts from the main My Virgin Media account a long time ago. As Adduxi  has intimated, each secondary account is now controlled from its own My Virgin Media account. All the main/primary My Virgin Media account now allows is for you to delete a secondary account. You cannot reset the email password or set up a new VM email account

VM can link a “secondary” email to a different VM broadband (My Virgin Media) account but there a limitations. The main one being that the original broadband account that the email account was linked to has to be in the same name as the new broadband account. I’m thinking that may not be the case here.

As Horsey299 has said, you will need to wait for VM staff to contact you regarding that.

    2)      If you or your mother knew the account password you could reset it and set its username to a non VM email address without it being linked to your VM account. You just need to sign into the My Virgin Media account link https://www.virginmedia.com/my-virgin-media using your mother’s email address and the current password.  Obviously, that’s not possible because you don’t know the password!

A couple of other points just for completeness:

I don’t know if you are aware but VM stopped issuing new email accounts 3 years ago and since then new VM customers have to use their own email account to manage their VM account.

Also VM are now actively closing down email accounts that are not linked to a live VM service such as a broadband account. So if your mother’s email account is not attached to a live broadband account then it is at risk of closure at any time.  In fact, the whole future of the VM email service is unclear. So now would be a good time for your mother to set up an email account with a dedicated email service such as Gmail, Outlook.com or Yahoo.

In fact, she will need to have a non VM email account even if she sticks with her NTL email account. VM now require you to use a non VM email address as the username to access the email account for things such as resetting the password.

So as you see, it certainly is not as simple as the title of your post suggests but I hope you can get it sorted. One of the Forum Team (VM staff) who support this forum will contact via this thread.

  • @adduxi I can’t do that because I don’t have the password.

@coenoby I have the option to “add account” when I’m logged in to my VM bit I can’t add the address there because I need the password.

all the email addresses are linked to the my VM account so they won’t be lost
