Had to change VM username yesterday to 3rd party email address, now lost emails in various folders

Afternoon, I have spoken to VM 3 times since yesterday lunchtime, and problems still not resolved.

I've always had/used a Blueyonder.co.uk email address as my main email address, however have always accessed each day & saved my emails in Windows Mail account which was linked to my VM email account, rather than logging in & using my VM email account. 

Yesterday, I had to change my  VM Username to a non-VM email address, & change the password, per call to VM. to access my VM account & emails account, and I was told that my VM email could no longer be linked to Windows Mail or any other 3rd party email provider anymore.

As of yesterday lunchtime, my Windows Mail account no longer updates & is no longer linked to my VM email account. The problem is that many emails I had saved in various folders in my Windows Mail account have disappeared, however not from all the folders, only most of them  ?.

Is there anyway to retrieve the saved emails that have disappeared from my Windows Mail account ?  Thank you very much for any advice, suggestions etc on what to do next.

    Confirm missing folder have not been unsubscribe from by sign into  webmail and::

    • select ⚙ > E- Mail > Change IMAP subscriptions…
    • select ▸ until all folder views are expanded
    • select ☐ until all are ☑, i.e. all folder are selected
    • select Save
    • select ✉ (located top left)
    • press Ctrl + Shift + R to reload page
    • confirm any newly subscribed to folders are shown in webmail

    If the missing folder are shown in webmail then close and re-open Mail app to see if they reappear there.

    Sign into Virgin Media Mail (aka webmail) here https://mail.virginmedia.com; enter third-party email and your Virgin Media's account password. Review folder content there for emails missing from Windows Mail client.

    Thank you for your reply,

    Unfortunately the only emails I have in my VM email account are only those in my Inbox.

    Any emails I moved in my Windows Mail account from the Inbox into any separate folders (set up only in Windows Mail), are not viewable in my VM email account at all.  Thanks

      Sorry to hear this.

      How come you changed them all into folders?

      I would advise resetting the settings so they all go back to where they was.

      We wouldn't be able to get back lost emails due to changings settings.

    Hi Matthew

    As most people do, they create folders to move relevant various emails from their Inbox into to keep their emails organised, rather than just leave all emails in the Inbox. eg I had a folder for Virgin Media, to move any relevant emails I wanted to keep from VM such as billing information & contract changes all in the same place.

    How would I change the settings in Windows Mail as you suggest ?, to make all the saved emails go back to where they was, I assume you mean the Inbox ?.

    The proper place to set folders and move emails between them is in webmail, because that is where the emails actually are. With your browser you're dealing directly with the storage on VM's email server. 

    When you use a separate email app, there are possible variations depending how the app is configured. Creating new folders on the app may or may not be the same as using folders of the same name on the server, and moving emails on the app might not actually move them on the server.  So there is a possibility of conflicts leading to loss of emails or folders. 

    In any case, no email service should be relied upon as a safe filing cabinet. You should always keep an off-line store of important email data.

    Thank you for your replies, obviously even email isn't as simple as I thought, as I've never heard of webmail before ?.

    I'm very pleased to say that after following the instructions above without having a clue what I was doing, my email sub-folders on Windows Mail, are now showing duplicated on my VM email account, with all the missing emails present.
