Getting legacy email accounts securely closed / deleted

Hoping for a VM Forum Team member to reach out and help with this.  This is my second post on the topic.

How do I get my legacy email accounts closed?  I was expecting this to happen around 90 days after leaving VM and made plans accordingly.

The previous post in May 2022 got a very swift response from a Forum Team member who logged an IT ticket to get it done .  However, over a year on all of my email accounts still show as deliverable on Verifalia. Some I can still receive emails from.  Some tell me I have the wrong password - these worry me most.

I left VM in spring 2021.
I had nine email active addresses (including the one for my main VM account).
The two most heavily used accounts are both inaccessible to us now because of the apparent password issue.  Since these hold a lot of information about us, this is a big security concern.

I’ve seen a few similar posts suggesting that my issue isn’t uncommon and should be resolvable.

Thanks.

  • Hi pritca,

Thank you for your post and welcome back to our community forums. We're here to help.

I'm sorry to hear that there's an email address registered to a closed account which is still active. So that I can assist you further, I'm going to send you a private message in a few moments. Please respond to this when you can and we'll proceed from there.

    Thanks,

  • Update 5 weeks on for anyone struggling with a similar issue:

We’ve only managed to get one of nine email accounts we had while a VM customer closed down.  This was done via a separate request made by my, now adult, son who was trying to recover a gaming account linked to the same VM account.  All the others still show as deliverable.

We continue to get spam and phishing emails to the ones we are  not locked out of. At four weeks on from passing the security quiz, we are some way past the typical 5 days to complete the task mentioned by the forum team.

It would be very easy to just stop looking at the accounts and forget that we ever had them.  However, if we did that, we wouldn’t spot any overly suspicious activity on the accounts we can still.

It’s disappointing that such a basic security matter is not taken more seriously.
