digital certificate error

I believe that anyone that has any errors sending/receiving emails via clients (Outlook/Thunderbird etc)  on (recommended) IMAP ntlworld/blueyonder/virginmedia etc mailboxes.  Thunderbird spits out errors stating that virginmedia is using invalid credentials.  Outlook for Windows refuses to start.  This needs sorting out as I'm spending more time faffing about trying to read emails

Thanks in advance.

It's hard to see why a diminishing number of people continue to struggle with VM email. Sooner or later you will have to change to a proper, more reliable email service.

MrHalfAsleep  I am not getting any errors when sending or receiving emails via the clients you mention using my blueyonder or virginmedia emails.  If this was a common experience I would expect to see many complaints about it in this forum.

  • Thanks for the replies.

I appear to be in some kind of weird limbo (an infinite loop) that I can't escape.  I have a VMO2ID password, but can't complete the process to register it; despite trying other emails.  The (VMO2ID) links expire for some reason.  I haven't received any emails over a period of time trying to complete the process.   It's the same with my Microsoft Account;  I can't log in to it either as links don't work; I just get an error message (This page can't be displayed).

I switched to Thunderbird as Outlook refused to start.  This has been going for quite some time.    I'm getting sick of the whole tech thing and am tempted to go and live in a tree somewhere or go back to pen and paper.  Can't wait for digital ID!

I kept the ntlworld address as I had zero spam for years.  It's only in the last couple of days I've started getting spam.  I've had literally no spam since 2007.  Outlook, gmail spam by default. I'm getting hangry now as I've nothing to eat for 5 hours.

  • I give up.  It works occasionally.  It'll have to do.  This is what Thunderbird throws out:

Are you using an antivirus program that scans email? If so, which one?

  • Can't reply to replies (text box doesn't work); I'm getting wary of blasting data over the internet as LLM's can scrape stuff and plonk it into GPT.  My setup does involve an (integrated) email scanner (which works scanning messages), but I can access my messages eventually, which is better than no access.  It's not brilliant but is acceptable.  Data security is a figleaf of imagination...

You might want to look at that email scanner. Some anti-virus programs accept the incoming mail to scan, and then present their own security certificate with the email to Thunderbird (or whatever email program you are using]. Their certificate is not one that Thunderbird expects.

That may not be your issue, but it is a common reason why Thunderbird and other email programs give the message you see.

  • Email does work, but takes several attempts (IMAP logins, etc); what used to be done in a few minutes now takes several hours.
