Constant SPAM

Have VirginMedia turned off the SPAM filter?  It hasn't been great for ages but recently the volume of very obvious SPAM getting through is ridiculous.

My McAfee account seems to be expiring every two hours according to the content of the emails.

I try to block them but they use multiple variations on the sender address but any half decent content filter should be able to spot these.

  • It's been the same for months on my BY email account; at least 8+ emails a day!

Have VirginMedia turned off the SPAM filter?

So are these emails arriving in your Inbox rather than the spam folder?

If so, it might be worth you checking the Spam Filter setting in your VM webmail account.

Once signed in to your VM email account,

    • click on the cog symbol top right of the screen
    • then click on Email in the left hand menu
    • then on Spam settings

Check that "Move message to spam folder" setting has been flagged. It may be that the Spam setting in your in your account has been changed to "Turn off SPAM filtering.

Having said that, it does seem that the VM spam filters sometimes take a while to pick up on new versions of spam emails. Spammers constantly make changes to their emails which are difficult to detect by eye but which can fool the VM spam filters.

  • Hi Seagull79 👋.

Thanks for reaching out to us, sorry to hear of the issues that you are facing with a Spam filter and McAfee. Can we ask since your post are you still facing the same issues or have they since been resolved?

    Please let us know.

      Hi Sabrina,

No, still a constant stream of SPAM, either various AV software and the latest is Healthsocks.
My telephone email client does a much better job of filtering these which is why the VM filter seems in desperate need of an upgrade or replacing.

      Kind regards

Thanks for the update on this Seagull79. Have you looked into the settings to see what level it is set at along with filters that may need adjusting? Does this also occur on all devices that you have mailboxes on or just the one device?

Same here. VM email has just had an outage, as soon as it was restored, in came the spam. It never used to be like this, but I get the impression that this is a service that VM no longer wish to provide, so they're making very little effort to improve things in the hope that we switch our email to other providers.

And, even as I type this, email has gone down again …

      Hi JPL8

Sorry to hear you've also been receiving an influx of spam emails and that you lost access to your account again.

How're things today? Are you still unable to access your emails?

Thanks for your reply Beth_G. My email is working fine now 🤞 But I’m frustrated because every time there’s an outage, the spam /phishing attempts come back. It’s almost like getting the email servers back online results in a reset of VM’s spam filters. The first emails I received once it was working again were phishing attempts.

The only way to resolve this is to switch to another email service … and let’s face it, that’s no great loss to VM. But it’s one less reason to stay with you in future.

  • It is ridiculous the amount of spam emails that are clearing Virgins spam checker, there seems to be more going through to the inbox so they get downloaded straight to Gmail's spam folder on my devices.

What’s ridiculous was that when I tried to report phishing emails to Amazon, Apple etc, Virgin blocked it as spam 🤦‍♂️ So the filters do work … just not as intended.
