closed ntlworld email account still forwarding

I closed my ntlworld email account more than 5 years ago.

This year I've been receiving a lot of spam emails that seem to be being forwarded from the closed ntlworld account.

I contacted VM and was told that the account is definitely closed. 

How is this possible?
