closed ntlworld email account still forwarding

I closed my ntlworld email account more than 5 years ago.

This year I've been receiving a lot of spam emails that seem to be being forwarded from the closed ntlworld account.

I contacted VM and was told that the account is definitely closed.

How is this possible?

Yes it is definitely still forwarding to my existing (non ntlworld) email address.I did explain this to VM but they are adamant that the account is closed.

 This certainly is an odd one, if the email was fully deleted then any forwarding rules would also be. As you're getting forwarded mail, it would suggest the email could still be active.
 I'll pop you a PM to confirm some details so this can be checked.
