Yealink sip-t64u help needed urgently!

Hey all,

My wife uses a Yealink sip-t64u phone to work remotely. It used to work for weeks at a time, stop for a while and then take weeks to work again. We had a Hub 3 and plugged the phone into a TP-link extender via ethernet cable. Recently the phone stopped working (the extender and phone were accidentally switched off) and it hasnt come back.

We spoke to Virgin who upgraded our broadband speed to 1gb and we now use a Hub 5. We set it up today by plugging it in to the router via ethernet cable and initially it worked. We moved the phone upstairs and used our TP link extender and again, success. Foolishly we unplugged the extender and phone so we could better organise her desk and now the phone says service unable once again.

Strangely when we plug the phone into a Virgin router at my sister's house, the phone works and ditto when it is plugged in at the office.

We are at our wits end and I'm desperate to get this sorted. I've read that Virgin hubs are notoriously bad at enabling VOIP phones to work. I've also read that putting the hub into modem mode and using our own router is the way to go but we have no idea which router would work.

We even have a Virgin technician booked to come and have a look om Wednesday but I fear this won't help.

Please help, kind strangers!

We have 3x Cisco VOIP phones, the only VM setting I have adjusted is to Disable Parental Controls in the VM online account. This may be important as Parental Controls are a DNS filter that can interfere with VOIP calls and can prevent Wi-Fi Calling.

Using the "Connected devices" menu of the Hub 5, make sure that you can see the Yealink sip-t64u phone listed and it has a valid IP allocated and has a valid lease time ( i.e. not Zero ).

Hey - thanks for the reply.

So it shows that the phone is a connected device by ethernet cable (currently plugged directly into the hub and have taken the TP link AC1750 extender out of the equation). Intetestingly, the lease time that I see when I look in the DHCP menu (couldnt see this information elsewhere) for the phone is indeed 0.

I should add that I did see an IP address though I'm (embarrasingly) not tech savvy enough to know if it's a valid one - it looked similar to my other connected devices apart from the last number. Sorry to be so ignorant!

You are causing the problem by using a flaky TP‑Link extender which is breaking SIP traffic, so dump the extender. The best options are to connect the phone directly to the hub or to a mesh node (which replaces the extender). If you go for mesh, switch the hub into modem mode, put the main mesh node next to the hub and plug the phone into the upstairs mesh node with an Ethernet cable. These two nodes are best connected by Ethernet cable. If you use a Deco mesh you can disable SIP ALG (which sometimes causes problems with these VoIP phones).

If the phone isn't working now you can temporarily fix it by forcing a fresh handshake. Turn off the Yealink phone, the TP-Link extender, the Hub 5 and reboot as follows.

    • Turn ON the Hub 5 and wait 5 minutes until it is fully online.
    • Turn ON the TP-Link extender and wait 2 minutes.
    • Turn ON the Yealink phone.

Thank you for your reply. Is there a mesh node that you would recommemd?

I referred to Deco, it's well-reviewed and has the important facility to disable SIP ALG.

"TP link extender"   ... might mean a Power Line Extender, it also might mean a Wi-Fi Repeater.

Exactly which model number of TP-Link product(s) is this ?

TP link AC1750 extender but we have uplugged it and are now going directly through the hub.

TP link AC1750 is a Wi-Fi Repeater being used as an external WI-Fi adaptor for the VOIP phone.

If the AC1750 has an internal DHCP server Enabled,  that would mean Double NAT and that is very bad news for SIP / VOIP phones.

Look to get your own wifi router with 1Gb or 2.5Gb ports and out hub in modem mode
