WiFi issues with Apple products only

For the last few months I’ve been having WiFi issues with both iPhones and iPads dropping the WiFi constantly while everything else connected to the WiFi works perfectly. I have tried resetting the router and the iPhone/ipad both nothing works.

  • We've checked the connection and equipment today and there are no area outages reported, the levels and spec's are all where we would expect them to be and the speeds do seem to have improved over the last 24 hours to 273Mbps download and 27Mbps upload from earlier in the week.

Have the dropouts eased since your last message and over this time? Let us know.

Settings to discourage mobiles from dropping Wi-Fi
and reverting to the GSM mobile data.

    For iPhones...

    Disable "Wi-Fi Assist"    Ref:https://support.apple.com/en-us/102228

    For Android phones...

    Disable "Switch to mobile data"

    Settings >> Connections >> Wi-Fi >> ... ( 3 dot menu ) >> "Switch to mobile data"  ( set to OFF )

I am all Apple and have no issues.  There have been several similar posts to yours many of which were easily solved.  I collect these :-)

Here are the collected comments - work through them and see if they can sort you.

                 APPLE CONNECTION ISSUES

The setting that is critical on the Hub 3 is to have Wi-Fi Security set to WPA2-PSK
this will ensure a fuss free connection with Apple kit.
    ———————————————-

After a MacOS/iOS update, it may auto turn on Automatic Proxy Discovery for all Wi-Fi networks - so for MacOS - turn it off in network settings.  In iOs go to Settings>WiFi> tap the blue”I” icon and scroll down and make sure Configure Proxy/‘ is set to off - also that Configure DNS and Configure IP are set to automatic

    ===========
Check this...  no connectivity on Apple kit may be a MAC filtering issue for Apple devices

Also, are you running a VPN - if so turn it off and see if that helps - also disable “Private Relay” if that's switched on in your iCloud settings on the phone/mac.

    APPLE WIFI SCANNER

Get Apple's Airport Utility for the iPhone. Then go ... Settings->Airport Utility scroll down and toggle "Wifi Scanner" to on (green). Then open the App and click on the Blue WiFi Scan icon at top right. then hit the blue “Scan” icon - when you are in the location of the affected device(s).

Data will flow in continuously updating, with the SSID’s showing with the "strongest" i.e. "best" signal at the top of the list - they have the highest RSSI values - and the channel numbers are also shown.

Only use channels 1,6,11 for the 2.4 GHz band - choose the best channel for your location (least congested ) and switch your SSID to that.

Thank you for the help a lot of the these iPhone/ios setting I already had sorted but looking at the security setting in the router it’s set to WPA2-PSK but the signal keeps dropping i just changed it to WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE it seemed improved but I now get a warning under my WiFi on my phone telling me it’s weak security is this ok or should I switch it back? How do I change the channels on router?

    •    Access your Hub by navigating to 192.168.0.1
    •    Login with the default login info (on base of Hub) unless you've already updated it.
    •    Go to Advanced Settings > Wireless > Security

    •    Disable the Smart Optimisation on the wifi bands.
    •    Under Wireless Frequency 2.4GHz change the Wifi Network Name (SSID), suggest append _2 to the end.
    •    Repeat for the Wireless Frequency 5GHz, suggest append _5 to the end and click on Apply changes
    •    Try to avoid spaces and periods in the SSID names as they can cause issues with certain devices.

This is to split the SSID's away from the single SSID used by VM.  Once split you can change the channel as mentioned by jbrennand

HOWEVER, if you are using the Pods, or the Connect App, this will not work.  The Pods need a single SSID and Smart Optimisation on, and the Connect App will reset the Wifi settings to suit the Pods.

The Apple weak security warning usually occurs if the older WPA-PSK
is enabled either on its own or combined with the WPA2 & WPA3 encryption modes.

Ok so is it ok to leave it on WPA2 & WPA3  or is that not good idea? But It definitely fixes the WiFi dropping out on Apple products.

WPA2 & WPA3 is fine, this is the preferred option.

        WPA-PSK i.e. WPA1 is only required for WI-Fi kit made before 2004 i.e. 20+ years old.

Ok thanks again for the help so just to clarify it’s ok to change it from WPA2-PSK (seemed to be causing the drop in WiFi on my iPhone on iPad) to WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE (even though I get weak security warning)

thank you but I realised it was WPA2-PSK/WPA-PSK not WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE. Is that ok? Ive gone back to WPA2-PSK for the time being but still having problems with the WiFi signal dropping on some devices.

Sorry also to add when I check to service status on the app it keeps saying there’s “Intermittent signal in your area We’re looking into it. Check back here after 24 hours” and my tv status says “There are issues affecting your TV service” but we don’t seem to be having any issue with the tv just the WiFi signal dropping constantly for the last few months on and off. I’m not understanding what’s causing this as the router was only replaced 2 years ago.
