Why do I have separate Networks for Wired and Wireless?

I have my laptop and TV connected to the Hub on Wireless and my desktop connected on Wired, and they are connecting to two different networks.

This means I can't do filesharing and media centre from my desktop.

The Wireless network shows up with the name I gave it in the Hub settings, the Wired connection is just "Network 2".

Any idea how to get them all on the same network?

(Internet is working fine across all devices)

  • The network name for your wired connection is not important, if plugged in via Ethernet it will still be connected to the same network regardless of the name.

On your desktop, is your network type set to Private or Public? It will need to be set as a private network to allow sharing. You may also need to turn on "File and Printer Sharing" under  "Advanced Sharing Settings".

Are you using a third party firewall? Some Internet Security products are known to block network filesharing until you create a firewall rule.

      Tuning in

Oh, muggins here thought that if I set the network to Private then my Firewall (Avast) would automatically allow it, but actually there is a setting "I trust this network" in the Firewall>Network settings to enable.

I feel silly for not having checked earlier!

      Thanks very much Asim

Check your devices all on the same LAN IP range
For a VM Hub in Router mode this would be 192.168.0.xxx

I have read several reports that suggest VM Hub 5 may ( does ? ) not pass network traffic between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands. Not having a Hub 5 I am unable to perform a ping test to confirm or refute the suggestion.

You may be right.  I have a Hub 5 and passing traffic between 2.4GHz and the 5GHz networks is very iffy.  On my Mac Book on the 5GHz network, some devices on the 2.4GHz network will ping, some will not, even though I know they are connected and working.  Even the Ping tool in the Hub is flaky, there are several devices listed as connected in the hub, but a ping fails using the tool in the Hub!

The feedback that drew my attention was from Hub 5 Router mode customers who had successfully connected a 2.4GHz only Printer to the Hub 5 and used dual band laptop connected via 5GHz but were unable to print and reported errors of printer not found / printer offline.

Another reason why my printers are all ethernet connected .....   ðŸ˜‰

One thing you could try as a last resort is a pin hole reset of the hub, don’t forget you will negate any setting you have previous made, you will have to reapply them.
