Guest network

Hi

I am going to have a home cctv system set up on my property. Would it be best practice to put this on a guest network to isolate it from my other devices and my data. I am concerned about the cameras being hacked. I know about strong hub passwords and 2 step authentication and have that sorted. But think the security system should be on a separate network. Would like your opinion and also some instruction on how to do this please.

Some points to consider. 1) do not buy a WiFi camera system, very easy to hack, 2) do not buy a cheap Chinese system that keeps calling home to China 3) do not buy a system that stores its data in the cloud, no good if/when your internet goes down 4) if it’s for security then make sure every camera is visible by another camera, so they cannot be ‘taken out’ without you knowing.

I use a Ubiquiti/Unifi system that abides by all the above requirements and also has face recognition and car number plate recognition.

  • I purchased a tenda Router whioch I setup as a WiFi access point, my CCTV cameras operate at 2.4GHz, so I just use the 2.4GHz on the router for cameras only. It also supplies excellent 5 GHz WiFi topup as it is on the end of a 20 meter cat5e cable.
