Superhub 5 & 5x Discussion

As the title suggests, I thought it necessary to start a thread to discuss the x2 versions of the Superhub5 in the wild!

Feel free to post pictures, experiences, bugs, improvements, observations etc.

Key discussion points are...

  • Why the x2 models?
  • Spec differences?
  • Software / firmware / hardware /port differences?
  • Bugs with either?
  • Options missing? (For example modem mode missing from 5X)

  • It will be interesting to see what happens in my local are (30 former NTL area) I’m on a Hub5 now that I have to have in modem mode because it doesn’t like having lots of devices so if you have more than a couple of IOT devices don’t say you weren’t warned. Changing DNS from VMs dns seems to have helped.

City fibre have put poles up in the streets and are almost ready to go public with VMs duct cables nearing the end of their life span it be interesting to see if they speed up the 5x and if they will use their own ducting or swap over to the fibre poles.

Almost all of VM's XGS-PON is being built by using its ducts. A small part of its RFoG uses Openreach's poles and I expect that these poles will continue to be used for XGS-PON.

Your connection might well have been done using nexfibre's network, a new one being built with VM's active collaboration..

  • I've ordered my upgrade and it should be here on Friday.

One of the questions I know the VM team won't answer is:

Can I get back to ports other than port 80 on this router or is the port forwarding still super restrictive?

General questions, is the response time of this hub any better than the super slow ui of the Hub 3.0?

I've had the SH5 for around a year and is great compared to the SH3, the response times are much better than that SH3.   I used to use a TP link mesh wifi with the SH3 in modem mode.

Now I have the SH5, I don't need the TP-link mesh wifi, i just use the SH5 with one of the VM White Pods and it works perfectly all around the house.
