Some devices can't connect to WiFi

Lots of trouble with the WiFi the last few days.

Some devices can't see the VM option on their WiFi list anymore.

Some can see it, but can't connect.

Some can connect but can't get an internet connection.

I'm connected via WiFi, but the Security type in Windows is listed as "Open":

Is that normal?

Any ideas?

The devices are a range of Windows laptops and Android phones.

Connecting via Ethernet seems to work OK, but via WiFi, it's dropping out and disconnecting multiple devices.

We've had the VM modem/router WiFi box for a few years now. Is it worth trying to get a replacement?

Thanks

Have you ever used the Connect app to pause devices?  If so, pinhole reset the Hub and this should remove any blocks the app has put on devices.

For the record which Hub are you using?

No, have not used the Connect app to do that.

      It's Hub 3.

Security type Open is not normal it means a Password is not being used and Encryption is not being used, many modern devices will decline to connect to a Open Wi-Fi service.

Worse the Open Wi-Fi service is available to everyone to connect to.

Via a network cable, connect to the VM Hub admin menu at Hub admin menus  and set the Wi-Fi Security from Open to WPA2-PSK and apply a password.

If you find the VM Hub has Security enabled and has a Password set, then some other device is offering the Open SSID e.g. a Wi-Fi Repeater of some type, that needs to be re-configured.

Thanks, I've set the Security to WPA2-PSK.

Any idea how it got turned off?

Before I just turned the security on, the usual SSID is listed with a "2" at the end for some reason EG "VM203029 2".

      Previously, it was simply "VM203029".

Do you think that was related?

We are using a TP Link booster type thing (unsuccessfully) and ethernet powerlines (with success).

Someone used the menu of the Hub 3 & turned off the security and modified the SSID.

Whoever gripes about their device having stopped working
could be the #1 suspect !

The "TP Link booster type thing" :  Find the model number of this the installation manuals are available online at : https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/download/

  • Thanks, everyone in the house is moaning about the WiFi as they can't keep a solid connection!

I've set it to protected but we're still having issues.

    On my phone it says:

Current network: Ready to connect when network quality improves.

Might be time to try a reset of the Hub 3.

    1) Press RESET for 60 seconds
    2) Keep the Hub powered on to revert to the factory settings & original passwords.

It could also be interference from the other TP Link WiFi?  Best to set the two WiFi as one and manually manage the Bands and Channels in use.

Thanks, I've turned off the TP Link as it's not really working at all at the moment. Will see if it helps.
