Renaming connected devices

Yesterday, I ran into the issue described in this post:

So I guess I'm not going to be able to rename the devices that are connected to my router. Which leaves me with two questions:

  1. Why was this change made? Does renaming devices have some potentially disastrous consequence that I'm unaware of?
  2. When will VM remove the information icon on the "Connected Devices" page that continues to tell users that they can edit device names

There's a very useful free app for Windows which lists all the clients connected to your router, both wireless and wired. In addition to useful information about each device, there is a space for you to write your own descriptions.  There may be similar apps for other operating systems, I haven't checked.

The app you're talking about is specifically called "Wireless Network Watcher". The description does not mention wired devices.

At this point, I'm only interested in wired devices - so it seems this will be no help.

      Thanks for your response though.

Hey davorg, thank you for reaching out and we are sorry to hear about your connection issues.

Have you had this issue before or is it a new type?

Does it give you any errors codes or messages?

A modern Laptop / Tablet / Mobile phone changes its MAC Address at random,
this makes device renaming a quite pointless and endless task.

True, but when the MAC code changes it doesn't automatically change the IP address. Also that app identifies some of the device's hardware ID. I have found that together they can be useful to identify a device.

Edit: Fing is also very helpful to identify devices on a network. But it's not free.
