No WAN IP in Modem Only mode

I have recently purchased the UCG-MAX, and am looking to use this to manage the network and "protect" side of the property. However after I have managed to configure my VM Hub 5x in modem only mode, turning off WiFi, DHCP, UPnP and the Firewall, my UCG is not being assigned public IP address on the WAN interface.

In this setup I am therefore not able to connect to the internet at all.

I have tried contacting customer support for assistance with this, and all four times, trying different options I was told I would be sent a SMS and then the line was disconnected. Only one of those times did I receive an SMS.

Any support on getting this setup would be greatly appreciated. Especially from a VM Tech Engineer directly.

I am puzzled that Hub 5x customers invest in a router even when they have read in this forum the Hub 5x does not have a supported or stable modem mode & may never have modem mode that is supported by VM.

VM will not offer any support with any of this.

I'm sure you would not say that if you use modem mode on VM and got moved to the hub 5x how do you think the super hub 1 got modem mode? it only had router mode in the beginning.

To be fair..I hadn't read in the forums about it not being supported, as that possibility never entered my mind. Using your own home router should be a very simple request.

My naivety is regularly my undoing though, so maybe it's just me. Though I'm also guessing by the implication of customerS that I'm not the only one.

  • Have you got the UCG set for Manual on that WAN connection and DHCPV4 and entered some DNS servers?

Have the WAN set as manual, with DHCPv4 but not manual DNS. Will try this to see if this helps.

you need to use DHCP not manual on WAN

modem mode is said to work on the 1Gb ports only but try all of them to be sure plus you may need to setup a VLAN100 tag to the hub on the WAN of your router

Have tried Vlan100 tag, to no avail. I know when masquerading as the hub this is supposed to be the solution, wasn't sure if the same applied for when attempting to use modem mode.

masquerading as they call it over at Ubiquiti is SNAT out the WAN so that the hub sees one source MAC for the WAN IP there are report VM are locking down the hub by it MAC which you can find on the hub but may only work without the hub as in the WAS thing

    Hi HA_SHTAG12

You were advised in your other thread <here> that modem mode isn't available on the hub 5x.

It might however be worth looking at the following non VM  <page> for an unsupported by VM workaround  using a WAS-110 SFP+ Module

I had looked into this, just wasn't sure if reports of it being a solution were anecdotal in the same way I'd read reports of modem mode working on 5x
