Modem mode not working hub5

Used the hub5 for past few months without issue and before that the hub3.

Went away for a few days and lost access to my security cameras. Started to check things out and it seems the hub no longer works when in modem mode. I can set it to modem mode but when I plug the Ethernet cable into my Draytek router I lose connectivity to the router and likewise I can’t log on to the hub without doing a reset. In router mode it works fine but it’s not practical to use the limited facilities of the hub, given it lacks the ability to subscribe to things like DDNS services.

I have an old router, which again becomes inaccessible when the hub 5 is plugged in in modem mode.

Has there been a firmware update that has messed things up? Or is the device flaky?

    Mine still working perfectly in modem mode - First thing is to set it up from scratch again and see if that sorts it,

    ... switch on and set up your own router or the first Mesh unit (in its settings) to have its WAN port set to be in.. Dynamic/Automatic IP or DHCP (& Nat) mode, it may be pre-set that way anyway. Then, disconnect all cables from your new router (or all Mesh units) and switch them off and unplug them.

    Then, put the VM Hub into modem mode ( https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-hub-modem-mode ) and wait for the base light to turn magenta/purple (on a Hub3 - but not on a Hub4/5!).

    Once it’s in modem mode, the VM hub “MUST” then be powered off. Switch your router/first mesh on and make sure it’s fully initialised (leave 5 min) and then put in the Cat6a ethernet cable from its WAN port to the VM hub (any port will do).

    NOW… power up the VM hub and wait 5-10 minutes for The Hub to initialise and and you should get a connection. Use the recommended App to connect any other Mesh units to the first one.

    This order only needs to be done the first time you connect the router to the VM hub. You might also set the SSID and key/password on the new router/Mesh to match that on the HUB so when you swap over, all your wireless devices should just connect automatically.

    VM can break stuff its happen before

    Test modem mode with a PC no router get that working then copy PC MAC to Draytek router if this does not work we can test some thing in windows by a registry change for the interface

    DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle 0

    DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag 1

    This with show VM that your router is being blocked by the hub or their network due to a change they did.

    The other reason is a bad WAN IP which just as easily could of happeden in either mode.

    Is there any better progress via a Hub 5 1Gb/s port vs the 2.5Gb/s port ?

    Just a small point. The VM hub MUST be the last piece of equipment power on. Power off hub, power off your own router. Power on your router, wait a short while then power on the VM hub.

    Finally got it sorted.
    Followed the advice above and finally it worked. Not sure why I hit these problems as I have changed the hub and router before and used modem mode without issue.

    However I wonder if the Draytek 2865 is more sensitive to cabling issues which is why it seemed to work in router mode as I ended up removing all the ethernet cables from one of my network switches and found one which was taking down the internet connection when it was connected. yet to work out what it feeds! (It's an ad hock network with a couple of switches feeding extensions as well as 3 ubiquiti wireless access points that has evolved over 20 years)
