Issues with connecting Hub to Garden Office

Hi all

Wondering if anyone can advise on some issues I am having connection our Hub to a new garden office. An electrician has run a Cat 6 cable from our house to the office - however, when I connect an Ethernet cable between the Hub and the panel in the house no green light comes on (and there is likewise no connection when I connect my laptop using an Ethernet cable to the panel in the garden office).

I have attached photos of the setup within the house - as you can see, the two Ethernet cables that originally came with the Hub (I am not sure what they are for - connections to TV?) are lighting up in green but the new Ethernet cable (on the right hand side) is not.

Maybe worth mentioning that this is the case regardless of which Ethernet ports I use - when both original Ethernet cables are plugged in to any of the ports they light up in green, but they do not light up if only one of them is plugged in.

Please let me know if you need any further information. Many thanks in advance!

The lights will only light up if there is a connection at both ends.  So, if you plug in the "garden office" cable to the Hub, and then connect your laptop in the garden office, does the light show up then?

Also you need to know where the two existing cables are going to for checking.

If all else fails, get the electrician back to show you it all working, or they will need to fix it.  In fact, they should have proved it working before they left IMHO>

Use hub in modem mode get a better router for where the hub is.

And this will fix any wiring problems out to the Garden Office ... ?

Well if the electrician that fixed the cable didn't test it then they are not very good.

As per Adduxi, get the electrician back first of all to test the cable and confirm connection/continuity on all wire pairs.

If you are minded to do any more testing yourself, this continuity tester is cheap and can be helpful for testing cables

    https://www.screwfix.com/p/philex-network-cable-tester/93219

It is a generic item which is rebadged by multiple suppliers so you may find the exact same thing cheaper elsewhere.

It only tests end-to-end continuity but, in the case of electrician data cabling, that is a good first place to start if you have a cable fault.

  • Many thanks all - after a lot of trial and error today it turns out a dodgy Ethernet cable was causing the issues and everything now seems to be working fine. Really appreciate all of your tips and guidance!

Been there, done that ;-)  The advice from goslow about the cable tester is solid.  It's one tool that's worth the money when making cables.

Glad it's all sorted now and thanks for the update.
