Intermittent signal ongoing for years

We have had constant issues with intermittent WiFi since we bought our home 6 years ago. After countless engineer visits, the issue is still unresolved. Each engineer is different and they all blame the last engineer for issues or find a new "solution" which never solves the issue. Each time we do signal check, we get intermittent signal, reset Hub or try again in 24 hours message. My husband works from home and is constantly being logged offline during meetings due to this issue. We are considering leaving virgin media and opting for another broadband company. Any help is appreciated.

Are you referring to a problem exclusively with wi-fi or do you mean your VM broadband connection is intermittent and wired devices are affected too?

  • Wifi issues tend to be environmental and outside VMs control, do you have any issues if you are hardwired into the hub with a network cable? Does the wifi work fine if you're in the same room as the hub?

If you are in a different room then the house construction can have a massive impact, eg if your internal walls contain foil-backed celotex this acts as a faraday cage and blocks the signal. Also your neighbours might be using wifi on the same channel as you and causing interference, in which case you'll need to change the channel you're using in the hub's wifi settings. All these issues are impossible for VM to fix as they are outside their control so it's unfair to blame them.

You can download wifi analyser apps for your phone that show which channels everyone around you is using then you can try and find an empty one and update your hub settings to use it.
