Hub5 no internet in modem mode

I have been trying for two days to change my Hub5 to modem mode. I am connecting to an asus rt-ac68n router running DD-WRTV2 in automatic DCHP mode.

I have followed this procedure.

1) login using 192.168.0.1 and select modem mode with only port 4 connected to the router.

2) When the hub5 status light changed to steady green and I can log in using 192.168.100.1 either directly from my laptop connecting to port 4 or via my wireless router connecting to port 4, I wait for the Home page status that wireless is off, internet is online, telephony is ready.

3) I then depower the Hub5, wait for a minute and with the asus router connected to port 4 (also tried with the laptop only) I power up again.

4) Eventually when home page status shows internet online, telephony ready I wait but no internet connection becomes available even after 50 minutes. On the Admin info page no WAN IP settings section is displayed.

Is there anything further to try?

  • Could you try one of the other ports?

Just to confirm there is nothing connected to the other ports on the HUB?

  • When your laptop was connected could you navigate to google.com, or any site?

No, nothing. Ping test wouldn't work either. It behaves like this every attempt but works perfectly reverting to router mode

  • And the objective is to set up a wireguard home server for remote working

      1.with laptop on port 1. Working. 2.

Then rebooted with wireless router plugged into port 1. Not working.

3.Tried laptop into port 4. Working.

4 Rebooted with wireless router into port 4. Not working.

5 Rebooted with wireless router in port 4 but no ethernet cables connected to wireless router. Not working.

      5. tried rebooting the router when not connected then connecting and tried rebooting when connected (just to Port 4 of the Hub and no other ethernet cables). Not working

      6. tried rebooting the Hub both from the interface (laptop connected via ethernet to port 1 whilst router connected to port 4) and by way of powering off the hub, waiting 25s then powering on.

The problem is, whilst I can run most things if in router mode and the Asus works fine, I am unable to use my NAS  as it connects to the Asus wifi network (4 floors up).

Any assistance would be gratefully received!

Apologies, first part of message cut off. My router was connected fine to my hub5 until power to the house briefly cut off. Now am unable to connect the router in modem mod. Have tried everything in my message, Trev's message and your message. 😞

  • So tried again with laptop on port 1. Working. Then rebooted with wireless router plugged into port 1. Not working. Tried laptop into port 4. Working. Rebooted with wireless router into port 4. Not working. Rebooted with wireless router in port 4 but no ethernet cables connected to wireless router this time. Working!!! Plugged ethernet cables back into wireles router and continues to work. FYI all devices connected to the wireless router have a different LAN IP address. Is this expected behaviour?

And Carl, thanks for your help

Each device will have a unique IP address, probably 192.168.50.x being an Asus router.

All my routers have DD-WRT loaded, so I've set them up to avoid conflict.

My further confusion comes regarding port forwarding in modem mode (which is still working 24 hours later 🤞) but the modem mode menu has no options for this. There was a mention in the community that the router needs to be in modem mode to use port forwarding but is this is a red herring? Just to recap, I want to run  wireguard vpn on the router I'm connecting to the Hub5. Do I really need modem mode for this or should router mode with port forwarding be ok?

  • Thanks.

And one last question for those of us who actually read the manual, is there anything published for the Hub5?

"is there anything published for the Hub5?" VM do not publish manuals for any of their equipment.

Because that would mean they have to support all the options in the hub😉

I've never seen any Hub manuals from VM for any Hub.  However sometimes there are manuals for the same Hubs from other suppliers. There will be similarities but the firmware will be different.

If you stick to modem mode, then you don't need any manual.  In modem mode there are no usable functions for the end user to worry about, it's just basically "bridging" the connection between your ASUS and VM's Network.

  • That should work, yes.

If this fails you can use a setting called 'MAC Clone' on your Asus WAN settings, and enter the MAC address of your laptop's ethernet adapter.

  • Use the below command in an app called 'PowerShell' to find the MAC address on your laptop:

    Get-WmiObject win32_networkadapterconfiguration | select description, macaddress

Interesting! Would ipconfig /all provide each adaptor's mac address also (physical address)?

  • Just one further note (Cannot edit posts anymore!) if you set the MAC address to be your laptop's your public IP address will change, so if you access anything remotely you'll need to make a note of the new IP.
