Hub 5x broken firmware

My hub 5x received the update to 7.8.3-2410.5 in the early hours of a Monday in October as my internet connection dropped a few times. At the time I did not think much of it. The next day at home I noticed issues on MS Teams calls where the audio and video would freeze every so often. The stats from Teams reported packet loss of between 5 and 25%.

I also noticed where I was connecting to remote servers (eg tryhackme) the session would disconnect regularly and it appeared to also be a regular interval, it is hard to measure accurately but certainly in the 30-60 seconds window. RDP to a server in Azure became my preferred method of measuring the issue whilst I was trying to troubleshoot myself as this was easier to track the disconnections.

The issue is also present on websites as well, something like one.network where content is frequently updated will eventually fail. I found this hard to replicate on demand but it would eventually fail.

I already had a second router and I put this in the DMZ of the 5x, this is very much a temporary mitigation as this is obviously not a proper fix. Whilst it works for me it is unlikely to work for many people as people don't have spare routers lying around to do this.

I did have an engineer booked but when I realised this was a firmware problem I didn't want to waste their time as there is nothing they could actually do with a firmware issue and I would have just been taking an engineer away from a customer who needed real help.

I have been waiting for a firmware fix and I have since noticed the router attempts to perform a firmware update (I see a spinning icon) but the page has no viewable content, viewing the page source states it is currently updating software but this has never completed even after a few days. I had a power cut and the router did keep working (thankfully) but a few days later it entered this update cycle again and has been updating for days I believe this router needs replacing with either an older or a newer version of the firmware to resolve this issue as this firmware version also appears unable to correctly update firmware.

MS Teams is in our experience quite the most unstable of all tele-conf call platforms and by a country mile the one that has the most grips on this forums.    Use of Wi-Fi and needless use of VPNs do appear to significantly degrade the reliability MS Teams.

Can't say I ever noticed when I was using Teams for work.  That was on BT VDSL over a VPN btw.  In fact the whole VPN session would have stayed up for the entire day.  It was a very, very rare occasion when it dropped.

Have you tried a full 60 second pinhole reset?  This should reset back to factory firmware, and the  update may succeed afterwards?

  • Hi ChrisC8 👋 Welcome to the community forum! Thanks for joining and making your first post.

Sorry to hear about the issues with your hub following a firmware update.

Have you tried doing a pinhole reset as suggested by Adduxi? - Please give this a go and let us know how you get on!

We can then offer further assistance if needed. Thanks for your patience and co-operation in the meantime. 🌞
