Hub 5 Modem Mode not working

Hello & please help,

I have recently purchased a Xiaomi AX300 NE mesh system.  I have followed all the tips and directions that I could find on YouTube and on here but nothing seems to work.  Both routers work when connected and remain in router mode but as soon as I put the VM Hub 5 into modem mode I have no internet on the Xiaomi system which makes me think it's definitely a VM issue.

The mesh is in DHCP mode. I followed the advice on a thread 2 years ago but nothing seems to work and I've tried multiple different things.  Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Are you putting the MESH into Router mode ?   Is it connected to a 1GBs port of the Hub 5 ?

Thanks. I got the impression the system was already in router mode as you can use any node as a router. I've connected it mainly to the 2.5Gbs port as suggested in the videos and forums.

How to put a VM hub into modem mode:

    1) Access your hub on 192.168.0.1, sign on and put it into modem mode. On the Hub3 the bottom LED will change to magenta, on a Hub4 the LED band will be green, on a Hub5 the LED will be green. Best done from a wired connection.

    2) Turn off the hub and disconnect any Ethernet cables

    3) Fully initialise your own router or mesh master unit and make sure the WAN port is set to DHCP (for some routers or mesh this may have to be done in router mode before entering modem mode)

    4) Connect your router or mesh master unit to the VM hub with an Ethernet cable, Cat5e or Cat6, any higher specification is a waste of money. On a Hub5 use port 4.

    5) Turn on the VM hub.

    6) You should now be able to access the internet and the hub will now be on 192.168.100.1

Note1: this only needs doing once for each new router or when VM changes your WAN IP address.

Note2: If you have a Hub4 and your own router is NOT 192.168.0.1 then it’s possible that you can still access the VM hub on 192.168.0.1

Thanks. This is what I've selected previously. What you've described above is generally what I've always tried to do but I'll try again.

I've also tried to follow the video guidance highlighted by WootDini Creative Media on YouTube but this also hasn't worked

Vm don’t use PPPoE so you need to change that.

You'll find that in addition to PPPOE will be at least one other option such as Dynamic IP or DHCP, so choose it. Now reboot your router.

  • I assume the blue tick means it's using DHCP and  assigned IP.  Is there anything else under additional ISP settings ?  The other thing could be to factory reset and run setup when connected to VM hub in modem mode ( as your post implies you've set them up and connected to the VM hub on router mode but maybe I misinterpreted).  I find it easiest to reset / set up VM hub to modem mode is via a mobile connected to VM default WiFi so I can leave the rest of my network / PC untouched

Personally, No.  Beg or borrow a laptop  and do this work with a cabled connection.  Connect the laptop to the Hub with no other devices connected by cable, and make sure you get an IP address as normal.  Login to the Hub's console and reset the Hub in modem mode.  Leave for about 5 minutes.  Log back into the console and check the Hub is in modem mode and the laptop should have a WAN IP address.  At this point I would power off the Hub and disconnect the laptop.

Factory reset your Router and make sure it is set to DHCP mode.  You can use the laptop to check this via a cable to the Routers LAN port.  Once this is up and working, then disconnect the laptop and connect the cable to the Hub.  This is the only cable connection that's allowed to the Hub when in modem mode btw.  Use the 1Gb ports if a Hub 5 at the moment.

Power on the Hub and leave everything for 5 to 10 minutes to settle.  The Router should get a WAN IP address.

One last point, and I've never had to do this in all the years I've had Hubs, is if this fails.  You could try putting the MAC address from the laptop's ethernet card into the Router as an alternative MAC address.

  • Thanks all for your responses.  After leaving both the VM router and Xiaomi mesh in router mode for 2 days I just switch the VM router into modem mode and everything seemed to work. I do sadly think there's still some connection issues as I have seen the occasional wheel of death whilst streaming shows or on a WhatsApp video call. I may need to investigate this further.  Thanks again
