Hub 3 to Hub 4 free upgrade?

Hi I've had the Hub 3 for years now, I'm on M250 Volt. Just lately I've had issues with signal, Virgin have supplied me with 2 WiFi pods, but I now have to reboot the hub at least once a week because it seems to get confused as to what band to connect to in certain  rooms, they were merged during the Pod set-up.

I wonder if I had a Hub 4 this may improve and eliminate the need to reboot all the time.

Are Hub 4 still made ?

I suspect a Hub 4 may be a used piece of kit of unknown provence.

      I've just found this.

"Free Upgrade Program: Virgin Media has a program to upgrade customers using their oldest routers (Hub 1, Hub 2, or Hub 3) to the Hub 4 at no extra cost".

    On our wavelength

Began having dropouts on Wi-Fi with my Hub 3 a year back that became more regular but Virgin couldn't identify any issue, however they sent engineer to replace it so no complaints there. Engineer actually had a Hub 4 & was happy to swap for that but he said he still uses the Hub 3 because the 4 is not as good & has issues of it's own so I stuck with a replacement Hub 3.

Parents are on 250mb & got Hub 4 when moved to Virgin from Sky 3 years back not only have they never had a single issue with internet but their Wi-Fi range reaches literally twice distance mine has ever achieved, now I know structure etc plays a role but there's almost no difference in structure or location plus my hub is actually in an open space dead centre of house so not sure if engineer was simply fobbing me off.

Reason I think this is that shortly before Christmas we again began having occasional dropouts that would normally last only seconds a time over a 30 minute to 1 hour period, no explanation & with only me watching catch up on the 360 box & the lad on his PC gaming. We even disconnected mobiles & Alexa devices so absolutely nothing else accessing web & router correctly configured & secured but still occasional buffering on TV & lag on PC.

Thankfully it hasn't happened since end of Feb' so touch wood it was an issue in street box or elsewhere but if this Hub 3 does start acting the fool again & go the way of the previous I'll definitely be trying to get a Hub 4 because my parents is still functioning perfectly in every way & still has far better wireless range than we have from the Hub 3 even after using coverage checking apps to ensure it's best placed.

      Hi czure,

Thanks for your post and welcome back to our community.

As you aren't currently having any service issues, we wouldn't be able to do any fault troubleshooting etc.

If you do have any further service issues however, please do pop back to us and we'd be happy to help 😊

Yeah nay worries, as I said (& you repeated) not had any aggro since Feb'.

Understand you may be nothing to do with who gets what & when but it must be said however, it'd be more respectful & appreciative of our business if best equipment was provided to punters without a battle, not as if we're paying peanuts after all now is it?

I have had my hub 3 for a year or two and am wondering if I can be upgraded to a 4 or 5 , I understand I might be able to get a 5 and the 4 is not really any better , any advice please .

Yep as Adduxi says it's best to use a decent 3rd party router with Virgin Hub in modem mode to save any aggro.

If you don't want to go that route though I'd definitely avoid Hub4 from all I've heard & read as they're naff, as for getting a Hub5 out of Virgin without upgrading to Gig-1 it never hurts to see if being nice to Cust' Serv' can land you lucky, all depends on getting through to right person in right mood & current stock availability as it has happened.

Only other chance is a friendly chat with your local engineer if you can convince Virgin to send one out to replace a dodgy Hub3 to see if he has one spare but again all down to luck etc, also remember that if they determine there was nothing wrong with your returned Hub3 after testing they could even turn round & slap a charge on your bill for unnecessary engineer visit.

You can ask, but I doubt you will get anywhere.  In the many years I've been with VM on and off, I've never used any of the Hubs as Routers, but they go straight to modem mode and stay there.  I'd rather use my own networking kit and save a lot of heartache...
