How do I reset my public IP?

Hey there,

I'm wondering how I can change my public IP with my virgin media router, I have the "Hub 3". I've seen other posts, and some say turn it off for 15 minutes, some say you can't, I'm not sure.

I do not have a separate modem, so I can't go into modem mode, is there anyway OTHER than dealing with virgin media support (which I've head can be quite tricky) to reset my public ipv4 address?

Well I don't know if you are being DoS but sometimes I get DoS if some people in my area upload.

It takes some effort to arrange a DDOS, so you must have really upset them. If you go back to the same site with a new IP, it won't take them long to recognise you and repeat the exercise.

Probably best to go somewher else for a while until they find a new victim.

I think you will have to change either your Wild Rage or your ISP.

IPv4 addresses are now in short supply. So any policy by VM that would allow on demand IP address changes would be unsustainable.

VM have an IPv4 address pool and that’s it.  Your IP address is “sticky” as you’ve noticed (a remember me by MAC address sort of thing).  Although you are on a dynamic IP address system, the “stickiness” tends to govern.  As previously explained, if you switch off for a week or whatever (crapshoot), a new customer may have acquired your old IP address.  Or if VM switch your circuit to a different server (CMTS) that uses a different range, your IP address will change.

Other ISPs use the same mechanism, more or less.  A VPN is the answer, perhaps, - though at the possible expense of latency.
