Hi, my AVG app has warned me that my router may have been hacked.

Hi, AVG notifing me that my network/router has a problem. Warned under something called "man in the middle " protocol. Suggests a firmware update or to use a VPN. Previous repeated scans have been fine. Any suggestions as to fix this thanks.

  • Unless you have opened up lots of port forwarding or DMZ, then AVG are simply trying to get you to sign up for their VPN.

If you're not sure or really trust AVG then factory reset the modem & scan again.   It's almost impossible to install rouge code on any Docsis router.

There are no known ‘hacks’ of any VM hubs.

Alex, do you have more Wi-Fi network components that just a VM Hub ?

I'm pondering if a Wi-Fi Repeater or similar could be mistaken for a "man in the middle" attack.

  • Many thanks to the posters who responded, deeply appreciated. In short, DMZ was disabled and still is. There were 2 ring extenders that did nothing and have now been removed. AVG package up for renewal soon 😜 Reset router and rescanned, all appears good again. Many thanks to all 👍

I suggest you scrap AVG and go for Malwarebytes.  Especially so if others can second my suggestion.

  • May have been true! Google and you'll find WiFi theft is absolutely rife.

Lots of recent bits on IoT weaknesses. Are the VM plugs secure beyond occasionally smouldering which I also experienced.

My neighbour bought a WiFi extender and the teenager maliciously sniffed/snooped, crippling my system and injecting malware via the backdoor hack. Avast found nothing amidst all the scans I did.

His father, far from killing the activity, invited another neighbour to watch what I was doing! At that point, I did a personalised insult and heard the meltdown. Reported them to Kingston police.

Replaced Hub 3 with a Hub 5 and overnight it was hacked due to the injected Malware.

Took Virgin Media 2 weeks to update firmware and implement remedial measure which I'm far from confident about.

So, set long passwords and if you get a new Hub, check it has firmware updated to latest version.

Don't assume VM are looking after your router's security.
