Dual Wan in Modem mode

Hey guys, quick question, I'm currently with BT/EE and thinking of getting a Virgin package in as a failover line. Just wondering do I put the modem in modem mode while doing this or just keep it in router mode. I have an Asus router which supports failover and Dual Wan and can configure say Ethernet 4 for failover or load balancing.

Cheers

  • Yes, I did this for a while until my VM contract expired. You need to have the VM router in modem mode to avoid dual NAT.

You need to check that VM won't be giving you a full fibre connection with a Hub 5x Hub, because that can't be set to modem mode.

  • Finally settled on a load balance of 5:1 ratio in favour of the BT line, this gives me full speed and 39mb extra upload so I can't complain. I was having too many problems with pages opening and was doing my head in having to refresh all the time. My download speed from newsgroups are full speed so I'm happy and at least the Virgin line isn't sitting idle. I don't have the faster snappier pages opening etc by having the Virgin line as primary but I'm happy with it and it's extra that I was originally intending to do which was cold standby backup line just sitting off-line.
