DHCP issues with new Hub5. Wi-Fi but no Internet on some devices

I got a new Hub5 about 8-10 weeks ago.   In the last couple of weeks some devices can connect to the WI-FI but they don’t have Internet so pretty useless.

This is only on some devices and mainly seems to be laptops.

However these devices appear to be able to get internet on the Guest network?

I’ve been reading around this and it seems you can only have 255 DHCP connections and Hub5 doesnt seem to be recycling IP addresses on the DHCP server.

is there anything I can do to fix this please?

Both of the sets of IP look fine.

    Could there be a Wi-Fi issue ?

Is the PC connecting to the MAIN SUBNET via 5 GHz Wi-Fi and struggling to hold onto the connection.

But connecting to the GUEST SUBNET via the 2.4GHz which works over a longer range and can be quite stable in situations where 5GHz is possible but not reliable.

Look to get your own wifi router with 1Gb ports and put hub in modem mode

I think you may be on to something here as this could explain why I can connect reliably via the lan extender (albeit much slower) in my garage, which is on the MAIN SUBNET but running at 2.4GHz.

Is it worth temporarily disabling 5GHz in the router to see what happens?

What will happen is the PC uses the 2.4GHz signal.

What may also happen after a period of hours to days
is the VM Hub will re-enable the 5GHz band.

Perhaps you need another  Wi-Fi Access Point that is closer to the PC.

  • Thank you for your response and suggestions - I will investigate further.

      Hello big_ian.

      Thanks for your post.

We're just wondering if you've managed to sort the connection issue out yet.

From reading this post it did mention setting up a guest WIFI and using that for the devices that need connecting. If you need help doing this have a look here

  • Hello! First time here. I was wondering if you ever managed to find a solution to this. I have one laptop and Alexa that don’t connect to internet. Called them, on the phone 2.5 hours and then they wanted me to pay to continue helping me. I am furious…

Trouble is the tech support people know very little because your question is not in their script/playbook and they are not technically trained.  It would be VM’s fault if the Hub 5 DHCP was not releasing IP addresses, but to confirm that, someone would need to go into the Hub’s GUI and check the allocated IP addresses against the devices known to be attached.  However, there are enough IP addresses in the range for this not to occur unless every address has been used and not released.  So, people suffering this phenomenon, need to get someone into the home who understands network basics to check all this out.

There are times when I think "thankfully I have my own networking kit"   I really don't think I could cope with the stress otherwise .........  ;-)

Be very careful not to assume the two distinct issues encountered
in this thread are the same as your own situation.

    [
Just ] one laptop and Alexa that don’t connect to internet

This could be the long standing issue of older Wi-Fi 4 devices being totally inoperable
    with the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 signal from a Hub 5 ?

The symptoms of this are usually failing to detect the Hub 5's Wi-Fi signal,
but may also present as attempting to connect then failing to authenticate with the Hub 5.
