Cannot connect to my HP Envy 4527 printer via wifi

My printer is connected to my home network via wifi. It's been working fine, but suddenly it's impossible for any of the devices on the network to access it.

The printer itself is definitely connected to the VM hub, and the printer's status screen says it's connected to the internet. I've logged onto the VM hub and confirmed that it's showing up as a connected device, but it's just not possible to talk to the printer via the hub. I've tried pinging the printer's embedded web server, and there is no response, but pinging the hub works normally.

Yes, the printer and all other devices attempting to contact it are on the same wireless network.

I've power-cycled the printer, the hub, and all the devices attempting to access the printer. I've also restored the printer to factory network settings and reconnected it to the hub, and flushed the DNS cache on the computers trying to connect to the printer.

Any ideas?

    HP ENVY 4527 All-in-One Printer - Specifications | HP® Support

The printer is a USB and Wi-Fi 802.11n device, it connects on the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band.

If you have a Hub 5 ( we don't know that ) and your laptops / mobiles are connected via the 5GHz Wi-Fi band you may be encountering a problem that has been reported a number of times where the Hub 5 does not appear to pass network traffic between the 2.4 and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands

If you cable connect laptops to the VM Hub ( & turn off laptop Wi-Fi),
does that restore the ability to ping the HP printer's IP address & make printing work again ?

With the computer connected to the hub via Ethernet, it works. But a permanent Ethernet connection to the hub isn't really feasible.

BTW, the problem occurs even though the computer and printer are on the same wireless network (the 2GHz one) - that's what I meant when I said "the same wireless network" in my original post.

It *does* work via wifi if I use HP's suggested method - shut down the printer, computer and hub, then turn them all on in reverse order, allowing each to properly boot up before starting the next one. But as soon as either the computer or printer has gone to sleep, even momentarily, the problem is back again.

I don't know if it's related, but every single time any of the three computers on the network wakes up from sleep, I get the "another device is using the same IP" message. That's been happening even with the computer connected directly to the hub via Ethernet.

Get your own wifi router with 1Gb ports and put hub in modem mode

"[not working] on the same wireless network (the 2GHz one)"
Suggesting a VM Hub with Wireless Access Point Isolation enabled.

"But as soon as either the computer or printer has gone to sleep, even momentarily, the problem is back again."

We have an Epson printer / scanner, it is Wi-Fi + 10/100 network port, via WI-Fi it does exactly what it mentioned above, goes to sleep, shuts down its Wi-Fi and unless the printer control panel is touched, it stays offline.  We switched to the 10/100 network connection and these issues totally vanished. We will not buy a device that lacks and Ethernet port.

"another device is using the same IP"

That is a big concern, it suggests the DHCP server is not working reliably.
Other serious DHCP response faults have been mentioned in recent posts.
Again suggesting a Hub 5 ( but we still don't know that ).

  • It is a Hitron CHITA hub, installed about 3 months ago when we moved to this house (we could not access VM where we lived before). There is no VM branding on it anywhere. Should I be asking Virgin to replace it with something else?

EDIT - having Googled, it looks like the CHITA hub is meant to be for business users? We have a regular residential account.

That's what I've got. Is it better or worse than the VM-branded Hubs?

This is the first time I've heard of a Hitron being supplied to a residential customer. Perhaps VM has run out of refurbished hub 3s and won't waste a hub 4 or a hub 5 for a punter on DOCSIS 3.0.

Maybe, Roger, there is widespread supply of Hitron now (as they come back from business users upgrading to D3.1) and are relatively trouble free,  Good news for AVR2.
