Apple Kit Not Connecting to SH5 Using WPA3

Hi all - I hope that you're well.

In short, I can't get my iPhone (iOS17.0.3) or iMac (13.4.1) to connect to my recently installed SH5 using WPA3 but WPA2 works fine.

I've searched the forum for WPA3 related posts and there was a rash of them earlier in the year. There appeared to be a known issue with Apple kit not being able to connect to SH5 with WPA3, although there wasn't anything particularly categoric, and I haven't seen anything posted in the last few months which might suggests that it's been resolved. Dunno - please let me know if it has.

I've also tried connecting using the WPA2/WPA3 transitional setting to no avail.

I've tried setting the wireless mode explicitly to 802.11ax, but again no luck.

And yes, whenever I change the security settings on the SH5 I use the 'forget network' functionality on the devices before attempting to reconnect.

I saw something weird too. On my iMac in WiFi | Advanced... | Known Networks my WiFi network is reported as having security type "WPA3 Personal" even though it categorically isn't AND indeed it reports the WiFi networks from my old SH2 as "WPA3 Personal" too, although obviously that's impossible! That looks like a bug, but I thought that I'd make mention.

So, is the inability to connect Apple devices to a SH5 using WPA3 a known issue and if so is there any outlook for a fix? If not, then can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?

    There has been some doubt expressed that WPA3 works on a Hub 5. Perhaps this is why is it disabled by default.

      Thanks fella and your comment is telling: ‘some doubt’ seems to be about as close as we can get to knowing whether it works or not and it shouldn’t be shrouded in this much uncertainty.

      Can someone from the Forum Team investigate please? I’m sure that I’m not the only person potentially wasting a significant amount of time trying to configure WPA3 when it’s actually broken in terms of Apple kit.

        I doubt that you will get an answer from VM, they cannot possibly test every device that uses their hubs.

    Has  WPA3-SAE been fixed in Hub 5 software update:   LG-RDK_6.9.35-2302.6  ?

      That's a good question. I don't know myself, but hopefully someone else does. I had a quick look in the settings for the firmware / software version number, but couldn't find it, where should I be looking?

    On our Hub 3 Software version on the menu page :  Admin >>> Info  

    Note : Hub 5 WPA3-SAE was also reported as not working with an android mobile & a windows laptop

      Ok, thanks - not sure how I missed that and useful info about Android / Windows.

      Presumably firmware upgrades are applied automatically, there’s no way to initiate them from the SH itself, is that right?

    If someone from the Forum Team sees this then please can you review and give us an update on the issues with WPA3 as detailed above? I think it would benefit a number of people, myself included. Thanks.

      Is this just with the Apple devices that this is happening with?

      If so it will be a firmware upgrade which the team will be working on, your the first person I've come across who this is happening to is it doing it on any other devices at all?

    This is not the first report of Hub 5 WPA3-SAE connection failures. We don't see the remarks often as the Hub 5 has WPA3-SAE disabled by default.  ( Loudly hinting it is known to be troublesome )

    With either WPA3-PSK only or WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE enabled connectivity issues have been reported with Apple kit, recent Android Phones & Windows 10/11 laptops.

      Virgin Media - you need to look into this a provide a fix.

      Ok, I’ve tried again and it’s now working although the router appears to have the same firmware which would suggest that an iOS update has fixed the issue.

      As an aside, when attempting to get my Mac to connect to the router with 5Ghz set to WPA3 it kept grumbling that it needed ‘a WPA3 password’ although the password hadn’t changed. When I changed the password to something else it connected ok. It seems, even though I’d ‘forgotten the network’ on the Mac, that it kept some association between the old password and WPA2 and was having none of it with WPA, although my iPhones had no such issue. Odd.

      In any case, WPA3 is now working with my Apple kit.

In short, I can't get my iPhone (iOS17.0.3) or iMac (13.4.1) to connect to my recently installed SH5 using WPA3 but WPA2 works fine.

There appeared to be a known issue with Apple kit not being able to connect to SH5 with WPA3, although there wasn't anything particularly categoric, and I haven't seen anything posted in the last few months which might suggests that it's been resolved. Thanks fella and your comment is telling: ‘some doubt’ seems to be about as close as we can get to knowing whether it works or not and it shouldn’t be shrouded in this much uncertainty.

Can someone from the Forum Team investigate please? I’m sure that I’m not the only person potentially wasting a significant amount of time trying to configure WPA3 when it’s actually broken in terms of Apple kit.

Thanks fella and your comment is telling: ‘some doubt’ seems to be about as close as we can get to knowing whether it works or not and it shouldn’t be shrouded in this much uncertainty.

Can someone from the Forum Team investigate please? I’m sure that I’m not the only person potentially wasting a significant amount of time trying to configure WPA3 when it’s actually broken in terms of Apple kit.

Ok, I’ve tried again and it’s now working although the router appears to have the same firmware which would suggest that an iOS update has fixed the issue.

As an aside, when attempting to get my Mac to connect to the router with 5Ghz set to WPA3 it kept grumbling that it needed ‘a WPA3 password’ although the password hadn’t changed. When I changed the password to something else it connected ok. It seems, even though I’d ‘forgotten the network’ on the Mac, that it kept some association between the old password and WPA2 and was having none of it with WPA, although my iPhones had no such issue. Odd.

In any case, WPA3 is now working with my Apple kit.
