Accessing Hub 3

My Hub 3 has suddenly become insecure. We run a Deco Mesh system round the house which is secure but the actual Hub is not. I have tried rebooting and also a factory reset but nothing works. I either get a black screen by typing 192.168.0.1 , or “Safari Can’t Open the Page” by typing 192.168.100.1. 

There are so many conflicting and highly confusing comments to wade through, but I just want to access the admin page and work out why we are suddenly insecure. I can access the internet through the Hub but it keeps disappearing from the WiFi list when trying to find it. I’m totally frazzled!!!

Do we need a new Hub? The 3 seems very old now.

    Resolved! Hub 3 knackered. Hub 5 installed and all secure. No way of telling how long we’ve been insecure but the locks are securely fastened and we’re happy.

    Resolved! Hub 3 knackered. Hub 5 installed and all secure. No way of telling how long we’ve been insecure but the locks are securely fastened and we’re happy.

    As an aside, when you do get into the Hub's admin console, what are you expecting to find that suggests the Hub is "insecure" ?  If the Hub is in modem mode, it does nothing except "bridge" the gap between the Deco and the VM network.  There is nothing to configure on the Hub.

      No idea. Set a password with a lot of luck. At the moment any passer by can access our WiFi. We should be able to access the admin page in order to do this. We can’t. I am now on to an Indian call centre and struggling.

        If that's the case, there is a problem with the Hub, as it should be secure.  Sounds like the pinhole reset has failed?  However, this is especially puzzling when in modem mode as the Hub has no Wifi in this setup, as noted it's just a "dumb" box to bridge the network.

    iPhone and MacBook tried and failed. Both happily connect to it. And a iPad. Weird thing is, the VM address comes and goes. One minute it’s available to sign into, and the next it’s gone, unable to “find” for anything up to an hour. 
    Just tried the Xbox, connected by Ethernet to the Hub, black screen again.

    I'm surprised that an Apple device makes a connection to an Open Wi-Fi service
    without a whole lot of fuss.  Usually WPA2-PSK is the minimum expected by iOS.

    Do you have anything other than a mobile phone to try with the Hub menu,
    like a laptop / desktop or a even a games console's web browser.

    Apart from requesting a replacement Hub on the basis of a non functional menu and the Hub operating Open Wi-Fi, I'm out of ideas.

    Hub 3 Wi-Fi with Open access, that is a puzzle.

    Are you quite sure the device is not getting to the internet via the Deco Mesh Wi-Fi profile ?

      As I’ve said previously, the Deco has been isolated. Device is connected to the Hub by WiFi directly. I have ordered one of those connectors you suggested but won’t be able to test it till tomorrow.

    We also have laptops that are too slim for a network socket but we have a pair of HP USB 3 to Gigabit network adaptors.  These solve all the gripes one reads about MS Teams and means we can manage our Hub via a network cable.  At £10 each they are good value.


    I'm not convinced the Hub 3 is insecure, that is because your not telling us the Wi-Fi can be used without requiring a password.


    From the last remarks the Hub 3 is in Router mode we can assume this because you are using its Wi-Fi.   In Modem mode the Hub 3 disables its Wi-Fi service.

    So the menu is at http://192.168.0.1/   if this does not work in Safari browser,
    try with Chrome or Edge or Firefox.   I use Edge & Firefox with our Hub 3.

    Make sure Apple Relay is disabled before attempting to access the Hub menu.

    Post a screen shot of what you see to give us fighting chance of helping,

    Let us know if the screen shot is before the password is entered or after.

      Firstly, I really appreciate everyone’s time and assistance with this. 
      I can confirm I can access the WiFi on the Hub without a password, tested by “forgetting” the device/connection and starting again. 
      I have tried to access the Admin page through Safari and Chrome, each time with results described in the opening post. Screenshots below. Apple Relay is “Off”.

    Connecting to the Hub by wifi is not reliable. Use an ethernet connection.

      That’s great if you have a device with an Ethernet socket. We don’t.

    There is a bit of a gaping gap opening in this thread. 

    The OP has a Hub 3 and a Deco Mesh.   

    We have not seen any words that suggest the system is not working.

    We have not see words that mention if the Hub 3 in in Router mode or Modem mode.

    No words to suggest if the Deco Mesh is in Router or is it in Access Point mode.

    We have seen multiple claims of resetting the Hub and of a browser fault that displays a black screen.   Using Firefox & Edge we have not seen our Hub 3 display a black screen.

      I wouldn’t have a clue as to whether either are in router, modem or access mode. But ignore the Deco. I am connecting to the WiFi of the insecure Hub 3 directly and am failing in all attempts at accessing the admin screen. The internet works, but it is not secure. I am not a computer geek or a specialist in Virgin media tech. I am just a simple user who wants a secure WiFi system to keep unwanteds out.
