It's quite likely that those recordings are from SD versions of channels that are now HD-only.
When a channel (including an SD version) is removed from service, hidden data is retained for anything between 3-6months to allow recordings to be viewed. Once that data is removed, so is access to those recordings.
Worth adding here, that recordings are intended for short-term timeshift viewing, not long-term archiving. The vast majority of the time, there isn't a time-limit - but in the scenario mentioned, there is.

Hi Carletonfour4 👋.
Thanks for reaching out to us, sorry to hear that you are having issues with your recordings that will not play, could you please elaborate further into which programs and the location of their channel name or number so that we can look into this further.
Please not that if you have changed your package for either 360 or lowered your tv package any recordings that were made at that time may no longer be available in that format on TV 360, or available to view if you have lowered your TV package where that channel is no longer included in your service.

A number of films i recorded will not play. Home Alone is one of many which was recorded on E4. It's says it is no longer available on virgin media. Another one is Harry Potter The goblet of fire which was recorded on itv2 which also says it can't be viewed because itv2 is no longer available from virgin media. These are just two examples of many recordings that will not play

E4 & ITV2 are both channels which previously had SD & HD variants, but the SD has now been closed.
As per the posts above, I suspect your recordings are from the SD variant.
