Sky sports plus and V6

I recently upgraded to get the sky sports collection and have now found out that the full functionality, i.e. red button function does not work on a V6 box, although it is available via the app on other devices.

I called VM and was told it would cost me an extra £14 per month to get a 360 box. I declined and said that this was not right as I was not getting what I'd signed up for, i.e. the choice of far more live football.

I then got a phonecall offering the 360 box for £1 if I agreed to have my broadband speed reduced. The assistant, however, could not action this transaction but would call me back. That was yesterday and I've heard nothing.

I've spent some time.on here and it appears that people are being automatically upgraded to 360 or you can do it via the virgin app on the TV whereby you get a new remote.

My question is if I migrate via my TV and get a new remote, will it have the full red button sky sports plus functionality that I can get via the app?

I am certainly not impressed by being asked to pay more or downgrade my package when my contract clearly states I have subscribed to the sky sports collection, which is not fully available on my TV.

Any advice appreciated. Thank you

  • I rather suspect a package change is the reason. As to why that's needed, I can't fathom - based on your precis thus far.

The full Sky Sports+ HD multiscreen is currently only available on TV360 & Stream/Flex boxes, and VM will be very glad to voluntarily migrate you to a TV360 if you so wish! Be aware that it's not so much a new remote, as a complete change of TV box software - with many substantial differences.

Your reference to people being "automatically upgraded" is most likely users who have opted for the migration, but then had buyers remorse and thought the conversion could be stopped. Alas not - in the case of a V6>360 software conversion, you have a short time (5 days IIRC) to voluntarily install the new SW before it's done for you.

There are multiple past-threads on this exact subject, but TV360 is very streaming & VoD-centric with recording retro-fitted, whereas V6 is very recording-centric with the popular streaming apps added on.

The Sky HD multiscreen is being developed for the V6, but there's no timescale for it and users who want it now must either choose to migrate to TV360, or use the mobile-apps in the meantime.

  • Thanks. I still don't understand why I've been told it will cost me an additional £14 per month to replace the box though.

Thanks, yes that makes sense, the assistant did say about package change and asked why I didn't check that my box was compatible? I'm no tech expert, I naively assumed that the package I was sold was compatible with the kit provided, how remiss of me. On the virgin website it says all packages come with 360 box, no doubt i'll be told it's only new packages. Not good enough.

What makes you think it's not? The V6 is fully compatible with the Sky Sports channels. The issue is with the HD multiscreen that has only ever been advertised as a TV360 thing.

        Newer is not always better.

It would seem that Sky Sports + is now available on V6 boxes. The wording on the info panel promoting the service, now says "available on Virgin TV". Photo below from my V6...
