Why can’t I have more than three 360 boxes.

Evening guys,

I’ve been with you guys for a long time and always had 4x TiVo that got upgraded to V6 boxes when that was first available. My contract is up for renewal so I called to renew and was told I can’t have 4 x 360’s I either give one back and can upgrade or stick with what I have.

How is that the case ? Please can someone explain. I’m happy to pay for the upgrade but no one would entertain me and I really don’t want to leave VM.

TIA - Sean

    Hi Sean,

New VM customers on VM's Full Fibre (XGS-PON) network can have up to 6 Stream (Flex) boxes on the Mega TV package. These are non recordable boxes streamed over the internet.

As far as I'm aware new customers on the older cable network receive one TV360 box and any additional boxes would be Stream (Flex) boxes -  it might be that they can have one TV360 box and up to an additional 5 Stream (Flex) boxes if taking the Mega TV package.

The above are new customer scenarios, so I don't think it's possible for current customers (even by regrading/cancelling their current TV service) to take advantage of those multi-room capabilities

However if you aren't bothered about only having one recordable TV set top box then maybe it's possible to cancel your all current services and then you (or someone else in your house) sign up as a new customer to take advantage of 'up to 6 boxes'?

EDIT The following page shows VM's multiroom policy  which is still restricted to either three TV360 boxes, or up to six tivo/V6 boxes of which no more than three can be V6's. ( it doesn't state anything about the Flex (Stream) boxes)

  • I'd just stick with the V6, it's a better system than the 360 which is missing a lot of features in comparison and of course you get to keep your 4 boxes. The move to 360 is because the software is owned by Virgin's parent company, rather than being licensed, so it saves them money. I imagine the limit is because the 360 defaults to all recordings being on one box and they then get streamed to the other boxes when watched, so there will be a limit to how much it can reliably stream at once.

Also, as you have 4 boxes I'm assuming you have multiple family members using their own boxes? With 360 all recordings are pooled across all the boxes so you'd have to wade through everyone else's recordings to find your own, and if someone else deletes a program before you've watched it then it's gone for you as well (and can't be recovered as there's no un-delete option).

Thank you everyone for your input. You have convinced me to stay with what I have and see how it all comes together in the future.
I will renew my contract because I do like what we have and we have had this for many years. Contract is up for renewal in 2 months time.

    thanks again
